Onlive

Last year saw Onlive bring cloud gaming to the UK market. And it's widely thought that  the company already has over a million UK subscribers. They’ve recently launched their own games system and Android and iOS apps, so it will be interesting to see what they have in store for 2012. Both the Wii and the PS3 have been great for online gaming and for iPlayer streaming, so you can expect big things from the Wii U and the PS4. And a lot of 2012's hottest game releases are set to be online multiplayers. To help you get the most out of your Plusnet connection when gaming, just check out our gaming connection guides.

Online viewing

  • Netflix

Netflix might have just launched in the UK, but it's already racking up subscribers fast. For just £5.99 a month, you can stream unlimited movies and TV episodes. And you can even sign up for a free month's trial now using your email address or Facebook account.

If you've just joined, or are thinking about signing up to Netflix or another online streaming service, check out our blog to find out which broadband package you'll need for fuss-free viewing.

  • YouView

Not many people known about TV streaming service YouView yet - but that could change later this year. The company's currently trialling a service that'll be launched early in 2012, enabling customers to buy a set top box that connects to their home broadband in order to stream Freeview, Freesat, catch-up and on-demand services, as well as paid-for movies and TV streaming services. Details are still unclear, but YouView could be a much cheaper alternative to Sky and Virgin packages.  We'll be keeping a close eye out for any developments, so just check our blog for further developments.

I think NetFlix and LoveFilm are definitely going to be more popular now that we have internet enabled TV's and gaming consoles But I think ISP's are going to have to start and offer packages with greater bandwidth, and the option for unlimited. E.g. 60GB as Plusnet offer just isn't going to cut it. The large bandwidth accounts were'nt needed on 'Up to 8 Meg', but now with ADSL2+ and Fibre. I for one would be will to pay a little more.

Valid point Ian. It'll be interesting to see what impact the Olympics has on streaming traffic etc. and is something we'll undoubtedly cover in more detail nearer the time ...

I would already be subscribing to NetFlix but I don't really want to blast through my monthly bandwidth. I'm a new Plus Net customer and I'm only on the 10GB package just now and I've had to adjust the way I use the internet since moving but I would happily pay good money for an unlimited package..... Netflix streams HD at 2.3GB/hour, so even with the 60GB package, it wouldn't take long to burn through the monthly allowance...... Plus Net definitely needs to up it's game to keep up!

There are loads of really high bandwidth and high data volume sites appearing - it's going to be interesting to see in the infrastructure can keep up! Also, will this finally be the year for IP v6? Almost all the hardware and PCs out there now can support it...

Have to add my voice to the bandwidth issue. I now have a 35Mb FTTC connection which opens up real opportunities for on-line video streaming. However even with a 120Gb data limit, with four people in the house regularly using video streaming we hit the limit every month. Have been with Plusnet for many years but unless the download limits are raised I will be forced to move. As fibre rolls out I'm sure others must be increasingly in the same position, so this will become a crucial point for ISPs.
