When the footy goes to extra time - iPlayer rescues The Apprentice...

Just a quick blog entry to end the week. We noticed that Wednesday evening was a relatively quiet night for the network, pretty much expected to be given the Champions League final on ITV and Sky Sports involving Manchester United and Chelsea. Lots of people would have chosen to watch the game instead of going online. This then had two knock on effects to our traffic, the first being the quieter Wednesday but on a different note we saw a lot busier Thursday especially for streaming traffic. In fact the initial data shows Thursday evening to be the busiest evening we've seen so far for streaming. Whilst we don't look at the content that people are downloading the most logical conclusion we can come to is that a lot of people were catching up on The Apprentice via iPlayer which was on at the same time as the match. See the graph here of streaming traffic, you can clearly see the increase over Wednesday night. There's also the graph of streaming over the last week so you can see just how high the peak is. **UPDATE** The figures are in and last Thursday we had the three busiest hours for streaming ever. Between 9pm and 10pm our customers downloaded a total of 252GB of streaming data (the previous Thursday was 208GB and Wednesday 21st was 163GB) Between 10pm and 11pm our customers downloaded a total of 237GB of streaming data (the previous Thursday was 190GB, and Wednesday 21st was 161GB) Between 8pm and 9pm our customers downloaded a total of 232GB of streaming data (previous Thursday was 202GB, 21st was 155GB) The previous highest hour was on 30th April between 9pm and 10pm with 230GB. Thursday was also the busiest evening ever for streaming; between 4pm - midnight 1.547TB of streaming was downloaded. Previous highest was 1.463TB on 27th April. Assuming that the streaming content uses about 250MB per hour, that represents approximately 6,000 hours of streamed content watched on Thursday evening.
