:). Ex MP has pretty safe seat and very publicity hungry, so hope he will take up the cause. Postcode is ct14 8er. Will try and get neighbour stats. Thanks

You need to make sure that with your reported line fault, not only have you mentioned noise but that there is cross-talk and you can hear neighbours' conversation. Are you sure it's a Copper line and not Aluminium (check with an engineer if not sure)? A mixture of aluminium in particular and salt water is not good!
Has it been this bad for the last 2½years? How many times have you reported the problems to Plusnet? How long ago was the last two times?
It will be interesting to see if your neighbours get around 1½Mbps or better!
Edit: whoops, typo on the speed corrected.

Postcode is ct14 8er.
Sadly a VERY long way from the exchange, you need FTTC (or cable) in your area ASAP.

Try putting your phone number in here https://www.superfast-openreach.co.uk/where-and-when/
As the post code didn't work for me I put in the local Golf Club and it said that fibre was available at the cab but that fibre wasn't available using the phone number
This could indicate that the distance from the cab is too long for fibre

Jim, it's a small postcode and includes a golf club with a published number which gets the same result.  Cry

Whoops, that was a typo Embarrassed  now corrected. (You will note the proximity of the 4 and 1 keys on the keypad). Anyway with a good quality 0.9mm copper line instead of the usual 0.5mm who knows what you might get Grin  Let's see what the neighbours are getting anyway.
1.5km from the Cab should get Fibre if the line was any good, I suspect the estimates know that the lines are rubbish.

Re: 2.5 YEARS of failed broadband and phone. Still not working. A new record?

Hi,
I was able to check performance with neighbour who is (slightly) closer to the exchange. He is getting speeds of 1.8Mb / 0.7Mb although his line attenutation does not seem a lot better... 69 and 34. The SNR is 2.8db/6.0db. I guess that this means that there is some kind of intermittent fault on my drop line rather than just length of the aerial line?
Thanks for help, you guys are so much more knowledgeable than the PN team!
Best, H

That is interesting, especially if it's a very near neighbour.
3dB suggests a clean and stable line, not subject (even though it is long) to significant external interference.
If yours is different (which it is) that suggests conditions specific to your line that "ought" to be fixable, such as bad joints or poor cable.

Re: 2.5 YEARS of failed broadband and phone. Still not working. A new record?

In reply to question 16...
- I am not sure of the cable, but the last engineer said that it was "low copper"???
- The broadband was very bad when I moved into the house in Summer of 2012. I reported it straightaway but was told that it was just a temporary problem and should settle down. BB connection has come and gone (always super slow), but over the last 2.5 years has been getting progressively bad, losing sync all the time and then not reconnecting. Telephony also crackling from beginning... but crossed lines is something new.
- I cannot check old tickets, but reported loss of service in December and January as tried to spend Christmas in house (which was a disaster as could not access e-mails).
- Planning permission has just been granted for three houses beyond mine (considerably further from exchange plus a new office for the Golf Club). It is clear that there are going to be huge problems with servicing them as there are no more functional pairs and if they can get a connection there will be even worse contention issues.  I thought that fibre might help, but this has already been dropped back three times. PN promised 27th April, but I hold out no hope (not that they would bother to tell me!).
If Charlie Elphick ("ex"-MP) can't make it a cause celebre I am going to put in planning permission for a microwave link to the Golf Club... they will refuse, but at least it will get some local media attention  Roll_eyes

Re: 2.5 YEARS of failed broadband and phone. Still not working. A new record?

I wouldn't progress with a Fibre connection until your line is sorted out - the service will be wrecked by your bad line - it requires a good cable from the Cab to you.
You should have no trouble getting to tickets you raised within the last 12 months. Use the first link in my sig.
So, if I've understood that correctly you reported the line in December and in January.
Have you raised a current fault for the phone line now?

The crackling line needs fixing as a priority first.

Superusers are not staff, but they do have a direct line of communication into the business in order to raise issues, concerns and feedback from the community.

Re: 2.5 YEARS of failed broadband and phone. Still not working. A new record?

Apologies that I've come in on this late on, but I've run a PSTN test and no issue has been found. If the line is still crackling, we need that sorting and an engineer would be the best way forward.

What sort of figures were being returned by that test Tony? They would say a fair bit about the "quality" of the connection.
