Re: 9 Working days, 14 days overall

Thanks for the update from your end. My broadband order does indeed seem to have been placed, however the order tracker status thing says it will complete on the 14th after 12pm. I'll keep trying it, see when I actually get on Smiley

Re: 9 Working days, 14 days overall

Edit: I thought I would just highlight that the 2-4 days to get the phoneline connected isn't quoted to "some new customers in emails" but is splashed all over the website which is where potential customers look first so to have a number on there that just isnt realistic is rather misleading

Re: 9 Working days, 14 days overall

Update:
Internet is connected & working! In the end it took 15 working days, 3 weeks in real time. My issue now is that I'm getting 0.6MB/s download & 0.3MB/s upload...is this normal for a new connection? I suspect not since my router reports being connected at around 6.5MB/s but it's slow as hell & speed tests come in at the 0.6MB/s.

@Martynormerod5
We've got you profiled correctly @ 5000kbps, matching the exchange. I can see that you've got a speed fault raised as ticket 35223027, this will be looked at as soon as possible.

Re: 9 Working days, 14 days overall

It looks like my problem is getting sorted! Just did a speed test and got 4.54Mb/s down & 0.37Mb/s up. Can I ask though, why am I connected to the exchange only at 5000kbps? I've been checking what my router shows the line connected at and it has never gone below around 6700kbps. Why don't I have something more like 6500kbps which would still be pretty safe?
This might seem petty but when I've paid for up to 8 meg I don't see why I should be limited to 5 meg when the line can take at least 6.5 meg. Thank you for sorting out the initial problem though!!

Hi Martyn,
I've just performed a test on your line and the synch speed is showing as 6076kbps so a 5000 profile is the correct one for that I'm afraid.

Re: 9 Working days, 14 days overall

Lol that is typical, it never goes below 6500 ish but then it's now at 6078kbps right when you tested it. Can I just ask one further question, why can I not have a 6000kbps profile, does it matter if the line connects at a speed that is too close or just under the profile?

Re: 9 Working days, 14 days overall

The IP Profile is not an arbitrary number, (apart from making the value a round number) it represents the maximum real data speed the a particular sync speed (bit rate) will give when ATM and transmission protocol overheads are allowed for, Those overheads are not trivial, they come to around 13%. The proportion isn't a precise percentage it depends on the size of packets transmitted.
So for sync at 6078kbps the IP Profile ideally would be approximately 5287kbps but BT Wholesale make it 5000kbps. However actual speeds (eg those measured on speed testers) will be lower because of the additional overheads of managing the connection between the user and the server (making sure the right data is sent, no transmission errors occur, and no data is lost).

Re: 9 Working days, 14 days overall

Alrighty, thanks spraxyt for a real answer! It never really occurred to me that they would quote speeds including all the headers etc, but then why wouldn't they if it ups the number! Well it seems I've got the best I'm going to get on this line so thanks for everyones help, this case is closed!
