As the post 'Free upgrade for existing BT infinity 1 customers to BT infinity 2' has been erroniously closed (I believe the post was referring to a BT upgrade of 55/10 to 80/20, and not the reason for closure in the link detailing a Plusnet upgrade of the 40/2 service to 40/10).
I will ask the question of Plusnet. Are you planning to upgrade existing 55/10 or 55/2 customers to 80/20. I ask this question because I was an original 40/20 customer that was moved to a 55/10 service. The increased download speeds were of course welcome, but the reduction in upload speed doesn't half make cloud backup services laborious.

Why not simply order an (up to) 80/20 service yourself?

Why should I upgrade to a 80/20 service at extra cost just to get back an upload speed I previously had? Besides, that isn't really the question. The question is, is Plusnet going to follow suit with BT and their upgrade from 55/10 to 80/20, just like they did last time when BT upgraded/downgraded its customers from 40/20 to 55/10?

BT never had any 40/20 customers. BT may have upgraded their 40/10 service to 55/10 because they want to position themselves as a premium provider giving faster speeds than others.
Plusnet's 40/20 service never made any sense due to the extra costs of putting people on the 80/20 service.

The answer to this is: to get back the upload speed that you previously had. Or switch to another provider offering you the 20Mbps upload for a price you find acceptable.

I think having just started the upgrade from 40/2 to 40/10 (sync speeds) it's not likely that there will be a further change to 80/20, that was BT's recent perk. Subject to confirmation by PlusNet.

Accepted that this is true. However PN did the downgrade to 55/10 from 40/20 to save money in the same way as they reduced new subscribers to 40/2 to save money.
If PN can swallow the fact that the 40/2 downgrade was not a good move and pay BTw the extra to go to 40/10 why not keep things in balance and do the same for loyal customers who have stuck with PN by upgrading them from 55/10 to 80/20. This seems like a fair and sensible thing to do from where I'm sitting as it should not cost PN any more than they were paying BTw when we were on 40/20..
Alternatively all one can assume is that it's the loyal customers who have stuck with PN for years who lose out again, especially we mugs who live in a Market A area and are being ripped off with that extra charge.

Probably because from sometime next year (April possibly?) the wholesale price of 40/10 will be cheaper than 40/2 is now.

The point I was trying to make is that BT have obviously done the upgrade for financial/commercial or even technical reasons. They won't have done it out of the goodness of their heart. Does increasing a customers speed (hence shortening equipment usage time) mean that the equipment can handle more customers, hence more revenue?

Without either being able to see into the future, or have insider knowledge you can only really guess, but two possible reasons spring to mind. With gfast seemingly starting to roll out, they will likely be launching some gfast products soon. Reducing the options currently available will make it easier for them to do that without over complicating their offerings. The other one possible reason being something to do with as advertising campaign and getting an edge over their competitors. Remember Plusnet is owned by BT, and aren't really competing against them. They are both targeting different areas of the market.
