Re: Domain transfer and E-mail problems

You are being fed a line I fear.
I suspect they are talking about the time for DNS updates to perpetrate around the internet which can take up to 48 hours - however the majority on DNS servers will pick up the changes far, far quicker than that - and the Plusnet servers usually within about an hour at most. So if you use Plusnet's DNS servers and you can't send yourself an email it means the changes haven't been done correctly (or at all). Can you see your domain here: https://portal.plus.net/my.html?action=domainv2&?membermenu=domainnames ?
If you can, check if the MX records have been added to the Plusnet authoritative servers like this:
C:\Users\John>nslookup -type=all yourdomain.co.uk ns1.plus.net
Server:  ns1.plus.net
Address:  212.159.11.150
yourdomain.co.uk
        primary name server = ns1.force9.net
        responsible mail addr = hostmaster.plus.net.uk
        serial  = 2011021114
        refresh = 14400 (4 hours)
        retry  = 1800 (30 mins)
        expire  = 604800 (7 days)
        default TTL = 86400 (1 day)
yourdomain.co.uk    nameserver = ns2.force9.net
yourdomain.co.uk    nameserver = ns1.force9.net
yourdomain.co.uk    MX preference = 10, mail exchanger = mx-ironport.core.plus.net
yourdomain.co.uk    MX preference = 20, mail exchanger = mx-ironport.last.plus.net
yourdomain.co.uk    internet address = 212.56.83.230
ns1.force9.net  internet address = 195.166.128.16
ns2.force9.net  internet address = 195.166.128.17
mx-ironport.core.plus.net      internet address = 84.92.1.97
mx-ironport.core.plus.net      internet address = 84.92.1.65
mx-ironport.last.plus.net      internet address = 84.92.1.97
mx-ironport.last.plus.net      internet address = 84.92.1.65

If it isn't pointing to the Plusnet mx servers the work hasn't been done or they have messed up and no amount of waiting will see it start to work.

Re: Domain transfer and E-mail problems

Hello Jelv,
Many thanks for taking an interest.
My domain name is shown on my Account details.
Your abilities with the command line far outstrip mine, I just about know how to find it, but I get something like
Server:  ns1.plus.net
Address:  212.159.8.91
and I only get the top 3 lines of your example.

Apologies, but I can't figure out how to copy the Command Line screen.
The latest reply to my ticket has stated that no further action will be taken until Monday at 9am. To say I am unhappy would be a slight understatement. Wish me luck,
John B

That's in relation to the billing, not the domain itself as far as I can see from your account. What's happening with e-mail at the moment? All MX records seem to be in order and its pointed at the right name servers now

Re: Domain transfer and E-mail problems

Hi Adam,
Sorry, in my irritation I read that as meaning until you get money, I get no help. I'll go back and check it all later, in the meantime I still have no mail, either using Outlook, or on Webmail, here at Squirrelmail or back at the Madasafish site. If I weren't already bald I'd be tearing my hair out!

Re: Domain transfer and E-mail problems

Interestingly I have just received a e-mail notification of your (Jelv's) PM. through Outlook! It looks as if internal Plusnet mail is being sent, but not external items.
Of course I'm techologically illiterate, and this may not mean anything, but as the first bit of mail I've had in 5 days it caused quite a stir!

Re: Domain transfer and E-mail problems

C:\Users\John>nslookup -type=mx yourdomain.co.uk ns1.plus.net
Server:  ns1.plus.net
Address:  212.159.11.150
yourdomain.co.uk        MX preference = 10, mail exchanger = mx.core.plus.net
yourdomain.co.uk        MX preference = 20, mail exchanger = mx.last.plus.net
yourdomain.co.uk        nameserver = ns2.force9.net
yourdomain.co.uk        nameserver = ns1.force9.net
mx.core.plus.net        internet address = 212.159.9.1
mx.core.plus.net        internet address = 212.159.8.1
mx.last.plus.net        internet address = 212.159.9.1
mx.last.plus.net        internet address = 212.159.8.1
ns1.force9.net  internet address = 195.166.128.16
ns2.force9.net  internet address = 195.166.128.17

That indicates that emails are being sent to the Plusnet. It also says that all spam filtering is disabled for that domain on the spam tab of http://email.plus.net/
I've checked the Plusnet caching name server and they are giving the same information.
I've checked the caching DNS server at work (not on Plusnet) and that is reporting the correct information.
I've sent you a test email (I guessed a mailbox name that I thought would work) - has it arrived?
If it hasn't - are you receiving emails OK for xxxx@yourusername.plus.com? If so could you PM me an email address that works and I'll try another slightly different test.

Re: Domain transfer and E-mail problems

Jelv,
Thanks again. You guessed correctly on the mailbox front.
I'm still a bit lost though, as none of the test messages I've sent from Gmail etc seem to be arriving. It was good to get contact from the outside world though, I guess deep in the settings page for e-mail here I may find the answer.

Re: Domain transfer and E-mail problems

Jelv,
E-mails addressed to xxxx@yourusername.plus.com are now turing up at my Squirrelmail page, but are not being re-directed to my domain, or at least are not being picked up by Outlook. I'm still confused.
John B

The other test has not yet arrived.

Re: Domain transfer and E-mail problems

Squirrelmail reads emails from exactly the same servers as when you collect mail using Outlook.
Are you getting confused with the mailbox configuration on Plusnet? In the Outlook settings you should be using the same logon name as you use in webmail. So for your default mailbox (the one with (default) beside it on the mailboxes tab of http://email.plus.net/) you will just use your main account name and password.
For the other mailboxes the logon name will be username+mailbox and the password you set via Manage My Mail for that mailbox.
I've just sent you another test from gmail copied to a mailbox on my own domain hosted by Plusnet (I used the same mailbox name as the email you received previously) - my copy has arrived, has yours.
Note that unless on the Catch All tab of Manage My Mail you have the catch all on only the prefixes where you have created a mailbox or alias (or redirect) will be received - all other email addresses will be silently discarded.
