If you are using webmail you need to change the Options Display Preferences to Show HTML version by default.
If you want a spell checker use Firefox with British/English Dictionary

I don't think there's a plugin available for the webmail platform I'm afraid. As Jim says, if you use webmail the best bet would be to get a spell checker plugin for whichever browser you use to access it - you can install the British English dictionary here.
As for the formatting, again that's down to the settings as Jim says - if you change the Display preferences in your options to Show HTML version by default when you compose your message you'll be able to apply formatting.

There is a spell-checker plugin for Squirrel.
Not sure what build we're running but SquirrelSpell is packaged natively with version 1.2.0 and above so it might just be a case of us enabling it at this side.
In the meantime, I've dropped you a private message Dave with another possible solution.
