Re: How close should my speed be to Plus Nets Estimate

Hi sbsdegb1,
I've just done some checks and it seems you are on ADSL1 which would explain why you are getting half the estimate. I'm not sure how you come to be on this and having checked your exchange I can see it is enabled. I am going to place an order for you to be migrated over onto ADSL2+

I have just downloaded the handbook for your Linksys WAG354G, and it should be capable of ADSL2+.
HOWEVER on the page that refers to the PPPoA settings, there does not appear to be an option for setting the "DSL Modulation Mode".
I have always used Linksys gateways, and it is often the case that the handbook screenshot does not correspond to what is actually there !

I have a drop down that enables me to select modulation mode. I tried ADSL2 but it failed but after Joanne's response I can now understand why.
Thanks Joanne fingers crossed this will get sorted and I will be getting closer to the initial estimate I was given.

What a fiasco all of this has become. First I am given an estimate of 15mb so I think to myself wow thats good I think I will migrate to Plus Net. Then the problems start. Takes me over a month without any broadband before I am connected and then I end up with 7.15 mb the same as I had before.
After numerous conversations with Plus Net I get the response above from JoJo at plusnet and a new order is placed to move me on to ADSL2+. Whoopee I say to myself eventually getting somehere.
I am told the order will take 5 working days. I hear nothing from plusnet so decide to call them yesterday (Thursday  7th) and am told that the order completed succesfully by a nice women in india. Wait I say to her. My router isn't notifying me that I am now on ADSL2+ do I need to do anything. No she says you don't need to change any settings and seeming eager to get off the phone so I let her go.
Rebooted the router. Still ADSL and no speed increase. I then manually force the router into ADSL2+ mode and guess what. No syncing. So I change it back and attempt to call technical support.
I explain my issue to the tech support guy who puts me on hold while he goes to investigate. He returns telling me he needs to speak to provisioning and will call mke back. 10 mins later he calls and informs me that the order was rejected by BT and that it appears my exchange isn't enabled for ADSL2+ and that the fastest I will ever get is 8mb as ADSL Max is what I am getting.
Therefoe if the max I can ever get is 8mb then where did the 15mb esimate come from and why did jojo think my exchange was enabled and try to regrade me to something I can't get. The tech support guy told me to check my exchange at kitz.co.uk and lo and behold the man was right.
I tell him I am not happy and that I have been misled twice and that I want to speak to someone about my issues. He tells me that the Customer options team are the ones who can help me and he would forward me to them and failing that get them to call me.
So it looks to me that parts of plusnet don't seem to know there ar*e from there elbow.
I am still waiting to hear from these people. I will raise a support ticket but it seems the only time plusnet pay any notice is when I post things on their forums.
PS. nice to see you have a new TV campaign. Pity the unsuspecting public don't know what a complete fiasco they could soon be part of.

Re: How close should my speed be to Plus Nets Estimate

I dont know who you were talking to, but we dont have a  call centre in India, our main call centre is in Sheffield, and we inherited a call centre in Durban South Africa when PN took over the John Lewis ISP.
if you put your exchange into here http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange_search  and look down the list for 21CN, it will tell you if you exchange is ADSL2 enabled

Re: How close should my speed be to Plus Nets Estimate

Well she definitely sounded indian and as BT have an Indian call centre I incorrectly assumed you did too.
Sam Knows info for my exchange (olo STLOCKH)
BT Wholesale informationADSL status: Enabled as of 30/06/2001
ADSL Max status: Enabled as of 31/03/2006
SDSL status: Enabled as of 29/05/2005
21CN WBC status: Enabled as of 31/05/2009
FTTC status: RFS date set : 31/12/2010
Kitz exchange info
Exchange: Locks Heath
Location: , SO31 6NR
Distance:- Direct:    2.8 km
  (appx)* By Road: 4.99 km
  Status
ADSL enabled: June 3, 2005
DSL Max enabled:  January 1, 1970
SDSL enabled : Not Enabled
21CN due : (PSTN) N/A
21CN WBC (Broadband) Not available

So both giving different information. One says yes and one says no. So I suppose it depends on what plusnet are using to check my exchange. Either way they have misled me the customer twice.

Re: How close should my speed be to Plus Nets Estimate

lol  Grin no help at all but thanks for the info. I am amazed that a) plusnet put an order through to re-grade on an exchange that isn't enabled and that b) BT gave them a 5 day turn around and also notfied them of the order completing. If it wasn't that it was happening to me I would think it was hilarious. Perhaps they should do a doble act at my local Jongleurs.

Re: How close should my speed be to Plus Nets Estimate

Just one more thing, can you put your details into the BT speed checker -
http://www.productsandservices.bt.com/consumerProducts/displayCategory.do?categoryId=CON-TOTAL-BB-R1
I just tried it with the postcode of your exchange, and it says you should be getting a maximum of 15Mbit AVAILABLE NOW !, but your specific phone line might be different !  Shocked
You would hope that at least the BT checker would return the correct result - and if so why did BT think the exchange was not enabled yet ?  Sad

Re: How close should my speed be to Plus Nets Estimate

According to this 21cn exchange availability list, last updated on 08/09/10 21CN should be available on the STLOCKH exchange. That list is generated by Plusnet but it is based on BT Wholesale information.
So submitting an order to move you to ADSL2+ seems reasonable. I think there must be more to this than has appeared so far. Hopefully the DCT can clear the fog tomorrow.

Very strange, the error message we got back it stating that your exchange isn't enabled, however checking samknows and usertools shows that it is.
Let me look a bit deeper and get back to you.

Re: How close should my speed be to Plus Nets Estimate

Right I've done some digging and unfortunately it's bad news. The exchange STLOCKH is enabled for 21CN, however your line isn't on that exchange. You're actually on this exchange: http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange/STWHTLY which isn't 21CN enabled and has no date set yet for 21CN.

Re: How close should my speed be to Plus Nets Estimate

Look at the postcode SO316NR its the same Exchange. I have done some digging around and apparently the exchange has 2 rooms. One is enabled with all the fancy kit and LLU and the other isn't. Good old BT only they can mess things up.
So the fact I was given an Estimate of 15mb was infact incorrect as the line checker obviously doesn't distinguish between the two Exchanges albeit one Physical exchange building.
If I am only getting half the estimated speed does that mean I only have to give you half of the money for the service.
