Re: I WAS very happy

Something I said?
As it looks like this might have gone into the too difficult bucket I'll just add this:
I live in a small hamlet in the countryside. For whatever reason we tend to get more than our fair share of short time power cuts - maybe lasting a couple of minutes or so. Of course when this happens amongst other things, my router reboots. That presumably can, depending on what time it is and whether there's an R in the month, result in BT slowing down my broadband. Genius!
Anyway I'm obviously flogging a dead horse... Let's just keep accepting this nonesense...

cute jelv - to be honest I think that's a little beneath you. I'd expect that from your telephone support people but generally you guys are USUALLY better than this.

Re: I WAS very happy

I would have said that this is a perfectly good answer to your problem, it would keep your connection open for a fair while during a power cut, which is your problem, not the phone line

Well PP you obviously havn't read the thread or my initial contribution to it then. My "problem" is that I asked for a reasoned explanation of ... well if your at all interested - read it - I'm not going to repeat it.
I think you also know that I was illustrating my point with the power cut story, not stating that as my "problem".
It's OK though - if you'd all prefer to dodge the point of my original question - fine. Just keep repeating ad-nauseum about router re-booting, don't question it, don't try to do anything about it. Sounds about par for the course doesn't it?

Re: I WAS very happy

Funny I thought you said your router reboots when you get a power cut

Funny - I thought I just said this.

...and it would appear you STILL haven't. This is what I said originally in post #12
Quote from: whistler
This whole business of how (apparantly) BT monitor line quality and when and how often we should or shouldn't reboot our routers has had me perplexed ever since I first came accross it on plusnet.
Can someone riddle me this please: The whole TCP/IP thing works on retransmitting packets that fail to reach EACH hop of their destination intact for whatever reason. If BT monitored the proportion of retransmits between my router and their exchange they'd have a completely accurate indication of line quality.  Why on earth do they (BT) use a disconnection (or not) to "determine" (i.e. guess) whether there's a problem (or not) with line quality.

Let me say it again just to try to help those that might not be keeping up...
The power cut story was to illustrate my point in post #12. The power cut story is NOT my problem - BTW - did I say post number 12 - That's my question...

Who's telephone support? The only telephone I offer is on Rootkey software and that's for two specific clients.

Re: I WAS very happy

Yeah OK Jelv - I confused you for a moment with plusnet support - my humble apologies.
However, you know the point I was making cos you answered it first back at #13. When I then came back at #14 you apparently had no more to say regards the actual point in hand so why didn't you just leave it at that?
Or like pierre, do you just go for the quick shot and to hell with the main issue?
Well I guess between you you've probably killed any chance of getting a decent answer. Another thread descends into the dust.

Re: I WAS very happy

It was a genuine suggestion. I have my router on a UPS and it's saved me from a lot of problems when we've had power brownouts which I'm sure would have caused a router reboot otherwise. If you are somewhere prone to power supply problems I think no matter how much BT tweaked the DLM system you would always be at risk of your speed being knocked back.
When you look at UPS boxes there's all sorts of complicated formula for working out how long it will keep your PC up for. I'm not convinced that's needed. Either its a brownout and the power is back to normal within 10 seconds or so, or it's a complete failure with becomes apparent after 30 seconds or so when you quickly save all your work and shut down which doesn't take long at all. So I'd probably just go for the cheapest.
What I did find when we had our last complete failure was that the light from the monitor is damned handy while you try to find your torch!
