I am not going to repeat myself. Answer above in bold!

If you cant see that or chose to ignore my answer above, then that is your issue.

Maybe get to specsavers if you can't see it.

i can see you've suggested three years, but you given absolutely no sound convincing reason for it, other than that's what you think it should be.

a contract lasting 18 months is irrelevant.

If it was say 3 years (2 x 18 month or 3 x 12 month contracts, then you MUST allow some overflow time for the other ISP admin, so I think it should be say 3 years and two weeks Smiley or maybe 3 years and 1 month to allow for holidays, illness or power cuts or  acts of god, that stop completion and re-starting. Smiley Yes lets say 3 years and 1 month?

or least just leave it as it is? shall we?
i see no benefit in a company holding your account for 3 years after you haved ceased being their customer.
once you have settled your final bill that should be it.

Can we bring this thread to close PLEASE!

There is no logic, no business case just some wild idea. It is unlikely to happen, just accept it.

Mmm...Looks like Billexit means Billexit (unless you keep on paying PN as they can't terminate your standing order) Shocked

Re: Keep old Plusnet accounts open for 3 years max, before being deleted

just to get back to the opening question - should account be kept open after you leave

For an account to be kept open it must include the relavent personal information to identify the ex customer

What does the law say https://www.gov.uk/data-protection/the-data-protection-act

The Data Protection Act controls how your personal information is used by organisations, businesses or the government.

Everyone responsible for using data has to follow strict rules called ‘data protection principles’. They must make sure the information is:

  • used fairly and lawfully
  • used for limited, specifically stated purposes
  • used in a way that is adequate, relevant and not excessive
  • accurate
  • kept for no longer than is absolutely necessary

I rather suspect that the two points in bold would contravene it as firstly there is no way that Plusnet can ensure it is accurate (move house or change phone number for example) and why would it be necessary as they don't need it

But what if PN keep taking your money after the contract end? Is that not an automatic contract extension by PN and they have a Duty of Care and MUST keep your data and account live, until they can terminate you and remove your profile from their records? Undecided and award you compensation and interest Wink

Re: Keep old Plusnet accounts open for 3 years max, before being deleted

they would only keep taking money if you allowed them to.
i know whenever i settle a final bill i cancel the DD, so that no further funds can be taken.
that's something everyone should be doing.

A Bank DD is a trust system and needs honesty, transparency and correct data management systems.

The customer must be able to trust the ISP and the onus is not on the customer to cancel the system, the billing should stop at the appointed time and not fraudulent pulled by the ISP.

Re: Keep old Plusnet accounts open for 3 years max, before being deleted

yes but leaving a DD active on your account after you've ceased using them is foolhardy at best.
it's best practice to cancel any DDs that are linked to business you no longer deal with.

remember, a DD is a "open port" to your bank account.
you wouldn't leave an open port on your router allowing someone access without you knowing, a DD is same thing.

Re: Keep old Plusnet accounts open for 3 years max, before being deleted

If I were to return to a supplier after 3 years, or less, I’d be miffed to find out they’d held on to my details!

For me when your service ceases then so should the account and any privileges related to it. With the possible exception of a username where it is used to identify a customer. It should be unavailable for a period of time that is long enough to allow the previous holder of the username have their account details archived to prevent them getting confused with a new sign up wishing to use the same username. How long that period is is of course dependant on the proprietary business protocol(s) implemented by the supplier.

Actually Plusnet have to hold on to some of your data for about 2 years so, would not be an issue in my view.
