Well in that case pay by DD
To be honest it is not uncommon for companies to only reward new customers.
As far as I can tell PN are unusual in that they do reward existing customers for generating new business.

I'm with Vodafone and they reward my loyalty once my contract expires by offering me a brand new mobile phone (value £500+), pretty much all mobile phone companies offer you a carrot to stay with them and not switch to another provider so I can't see why ISP's don't start doing the same? Of course, with PN not doing 12 month contracts for broadband (except fibre?) it becomes a bit different, they can't reward people every month so an annual thing would be nice.

why do people always expect things for free? Of course they are going to offer new customers great deals, they are a business and that's how a business works, you shouldn't hate on them for it. they provide and excellent service and standards that put other ISP's to absolute shame for a reasonable price. That should be your reward for being a loyal customer, a loyal service. Not ridiculous 1 year free promotional offers that they use specifically to grow their business and provide an ever increasing quality in service to the very people who are increasing their profit.
It would be stupid from a business stand point.

That's not really rewarding loyalty though. It is a marketing technique to stop you leaving. You are then tied in for a longer period. Pretty much most people I know are not interested in a new phone every year (or 2) as the one they have from 199x is perfectly good for making telephone calls.
I believe the PN referrals scheme is better - it rewards me by giving me a discount if I recommend them. The discount continues even if I leave I believe?

True, they could do like BT does instead and automatically renew your contract for 12 months if you don't cancel (I cancelled). When my Voda contract expires I have three choices. Choice 1, stick with Voda and get a new phone (though there isn't a phone better than the N900 I have!). Choice 2, shop around for a better deal, also getting a new phone, maybe cheaper rental and more minutes/internet/texts. Choice 3, cancel the contract and go PAYG.
The same is true with ISP's really, it's easy to switch (get a MAC) and enjoy the freebies you get for switching (3 months at half price or whatever), of course, PlusNet want to keep your business so when you phone you're asked "why are you leaving?" and then PlusNet offer a carrot to keep you (probably, never tried myself), the only people who don't get offered a carrot at those that don't want to leave. Would having a reward for long term membership be good for business? Heck yeah, you reward loyalty and you get results, like Sky who will phone you up and say "hey, do you want the movie channels free for 3 months?" you go "ohh go on then" and 3 months later decide to keep the movie channels.
