Hopefully the end of my sorry tale, but the BT engineer turned up on time this morning and I am now typing this from my now working connection. Surprised to learn that my phone line that I was promised was connected on or around the 14/10 was not connected at all, actually I wasn't surprised at all but after a month of relying on my mobile phone for the inter I can now use . Now for all those updates I need to start.

They let my friend down four times before he got connected and had the cheek to say that he would be charged £50 if he was not in.
