I'd like to see how many errors are logged over a 24 hour period with the new filter.
If that looks good it's then take up the offer by Chris to reset the SNR.

I will leave it in the main socket then, and post results when i get home from work in the morning..
Would the reset be instant? as tomorrow, saturday and sunday are the days when i use the xbox

A couple of questions:-
You have 2 extension sockets, when you removed the faceplate on the master socket ( to connect to the test socket ) were there any wires connected to the faceplate ? Just checking that the extensions haven't been directly connected at a junction box somewhere.
Have you tried another router at any time ? Just wondering whether it could be a dodgy router.

I would really love 8mb and if you say i should be able to get it on my line i wont settle for anything less
I have only used this 1 router at this house, and don't have another one to test

The router is still a possible, although unlikely, cause then. What make/model is it ?

@itsme, Agreed, but the fact that the synch didnt really improve with the extensions disconnected tends to imply the ring wire isn't a major cause of

I may try the wire trick, but the stats didn't really show much of an advantage over the main socket through the test socket

Normally people use a software tool called DMT to show that information from the router but DMT is not compatible with the TG585v7 yet, however the author of Routerstats has put together what appears to be a simple tool to get the Bitloading graph from a TG585, see here http://vwlowen.co.uk/internet/bitloading.htm.
You dont need to reset the router or anything like that, just download the s/w, run it on a PC,put in the userid/password for your router, and it ( hopefully ) should display the bitloading. You can then post with an attached screen dump and we can see if there is anything odd in the bitloading plot.

The bad news is that it doesn't look too good to me, those gaps at around tones 177 & 210 definitely shoudn't be there. On a good line the plot should be reasonably flat with about 9 bits/tone all the way up to at least tone 240. I've attached my bit loading as an example, my line has 29db attenuation so is actually a worse line than yours. I need to investigate what the frequencies are around tones 177 & 210 and see what might be interfering but I've got to go out shortly so it will be tomorrow at least. Maybe some of the other knowledgeable people on the forum may have some comments in the meantime...
Edit: tone 211 is 909khz , Radio 5 live, are you anywhere near a MW transmitter ?

Well it certainly won't do any harm!. Although given that the synch speed didn't improve from the test socket ( which would have disconnected the bell wire ) I wouldn't hold out a lot of hope of improvement. The bitloading plot shows that your line is suffering from significant interference from noise, particularly around 2 frequencies 909 khz and 765(ish) khz. There's a very good explanation of ADSL and bitloading here http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/adsl_technology.htm which,strangely has an example similar to yours!.
Is there any chance of you borrowing another router from someone, if nothing else then just to eliminate that from any possible cause ?
