Re: Slow Download Speeds - many reports but nothing on Service Status

A bit of a update BT has just been and says my line is perfect ?

But he did mention the cause could have been within Plusnet,s network , possible as they did not post anything to admit there was a problem

Re: Slow Download Speeds - many reports but nothing on Service Status

What do they mean by the PN Network?  The BTw network used to carry the connection to the BTw POP or the network from the POP to PN data centres IF your traffic is to a PN service?

I do not believe that BT speed tests go anywhere near the PN network or datacentres, unless you have a fixed IP or are on 20CN ADSL.

Unless plusnet step up with an explanation, users are left to draw their own conclusions.

In this regard, the BT speedtester is the same as any other speedtest website, which is pretty much the same as any other website on the Internet.

The only time the BT speed test would not involve the ISP would be the TAP3 test where you've changed the PPP login in your router.

As I understand things (and I accept that could be flawed) on the 'new' network where RAS authentication takes place within the POP traffic might well not touch PN data centres at all.

Re: Slow Download Speeds - many reports but nothing on Service Status

@rongtw,

We all use the "new" network - only if you have a static IP or are on 20CN, the RAS authentication is forwarded to the Plusnet datacentre (gateway / network) rather than being performed at the POP ... and all traffic is routed through PN gateways.

Re: Slow Download Speeds - many reports but nothing on Service Status

I think the Plusnet gateways are not located in Plusnet-owned datacentres as such, but I'd call them part of Plusnet's network.

I'll put it this way: the first stage BT speedtester result could well depend on elements that Plusnet are responsible for. The test traffic may well not go anywhere near Plusnet's own datacentre in Sheffield or wherever, but neither does any of your general Internet traffic.
