Re: Unacceptable connection speeds

Moving the router downstairs may be interesting at some point just to see if there is any difference when you go on to ADSL2+
If you want high speeds for uploading then you should consider the add on for increased upload speeds http://www.plus.net/support/broadband/products/faqs_and_guides/max_premium.shtml
When you say it takes all day can you advise the typical file size and the time it takes. The reason for asking is that it shouldn't be that slow.
It is possible that the company has a dedicated line with much faster upload speeds than ADSL can offer.

Re: Unacceptable connection speeds

I will check again tomorrow with regards to transferring files. I will also try moving the router downstairs.
This afternoon the connection has been on and off, which was always the problem. When I say on and off, the connection seems to be always there, but sometimes a pages takes much longer than it should to load.
I'll assess it though over the next few days.

Re: Unacceptable connection speeds

Are you connected to the router by wire or wireless. If wireless it would be worth trying a wired connection to see if there is any difference

Re: Unacceptable connection speeds

You've gone from a terrible line to about as good as it gets. With those statistics there is no problem in having the router upstairs - it is already syncing at the maximum possible speed. However if you have a telephone/Sky box or anything else plugged in to downstairs (or in any other socket) it must be filtered (that is VITAL).

Re: Unacceptable connection speeds

That's good news, downstairs I have nothing plugged in, upstairs I have the phone and the broadband.

Re: Unacceptable connection speeds

Excellent!
You might like to see if you can get the BT Speed Test to run. What we will be interested in is what it says for your IP Profile. At the moment that will be down around your old speeds; within three days you should see it up at your new speeds and shortly after that you start to see how fast your line can really go.

Re: Unacceptable connection speeds

I'll do another test now, I did do one yesterday, speeds were fine actually. I think the problem is that sometimes it seems to 'hang' that is a page won't load for a while.

Re: Unacceptable connection speeds

The BT speedtester is renowned for that  (hanging).... but it provides BT with background info, that we, as customers, do not see, and it is logged with that info when you do the test.... so unfortunately you just got to persevere.....

Sorry, I meant any website will hang, not just the BT speed tester.

Re: Unacceptable connection speeds

It could also be AVG Link scanner, that hold up web pages terribly, if you have AVG go to the control page and turn off link scan

Re: Unacceptable connection speeds

My wife has been working from home today, she has been connected to the router directly (as oppose to via wi-fi), here connection has been fine all morning, mine has been quite poor at times, usually problem of pages taking longer than they should to load.
So I guess the problem could be my computer or wireless connection, can anyone help, I am on a mac with a built in wifi card, it has worked great in the past.
Thanks

Re: Unacceptable connection speeds

You could be getting interference from other networks.
Try using http://kismac-ng.org/ ; to see if there are any other wireless networks on the same channel as yourself, if so try switching to a different channel.
Otherwise you could be getting interference from something around you, any new electrical appliances installed lately?

Re: Unacceptable connection speeds

Thanks for the app recommendation, I'll give that a go now, with regards to interference, we do have a WII downstairs, thats the only new thing we have bought, however, the connection issue was there before that, so doubt it is causing any problems.

Re: Unacceptable connection speeds

Try switching the wireless channels on your router, go for 1 then 6 then 13(might be 12) seeing which is best.
