Re: Upgrading to hub 3

Surely if you want faster WiFi speeds you just buy a faster (e.g. WiFi6) access point, no need to replace the router?

Re: Upgrading to hub 3

I may be thick, @HPsauce , but if the router is only WiFi5, then that is the limiting factor - you won't get faster speeds at the AP?

Re: Upgrading to hub 3

You turn the wifi on the router off and plug the access point into the router and use that solely for wifi, like many of the mesh systems available.

OK, thanks @dvorak . Having no need for, and therefore no experience of, these fancy things, I was thick. 😀

Re: Upgrading to hub 3

@jab1 Inadequately informed, not thick. 😉

Access points "usually" refer to a cabled device that provides WiFi connections, which is what I meant. I'd call a totally wireless device a repeater. Others may use different terminology.

Though of course even a very fast WiFi device would be limited by the Gigabit connections to the router. Except for local traffic between high-speed Wireless devices.

Re: Upgrading to hub 3

I`ve ordered a quality cable to see what sort of speed that gives, but slapping myself for not reading that the hub 2 is only wifi 5. I have been looking at a new laptop but that wifi 7 and not sure any network supports it yet.

Re: Upgrading to hub 3

@Fronk99 there are a few after-market Wi-Fi 7 hubs available to purchase from retailers, however they are eye-wateringly expensive.

Yes i`ve seen some of those, the Asus GT- BE98 Pro is a steamer but probably, when the Uk version is released, leave little change from a grand. It reminds of a Stargate replicator which the wife hated.

Indeed Bob, one gets what one pays for!

A bog-standard "free" router from an ISP delivers a bog-standard connection.  It one wants more, then there are other choices available from the market place, at market prices.

Guaranteed speeds are line sync speeds ... not individual device data throughput speeds over WiFi.
