Hi,
im a major proponent of online privacy for all. Yes in some circumstances it'll be abused by the criminal fraternity but they're generally using more than a just a VPN , they're using TOR, its hidden services .onion sites and bitcoin as a payment method with further anonymises the payer as bitcoin us extremely hard to track in that it's encrypted and passes through several 'hands' so to speak , so it's near impossible , but not impossible to track the start point and the destination , Silk Road,Silk Road 2.0&Silk Road 3.0 in point if fact #FreeRossUlbricht
i would like to know if PlusNet just hands over its clients VPN data to the authorities or refuses , as it can do. Most ppl w a brain use a VPN that stores nothing on its servers and wat is stored us encrypted w a minimal 128bit SSL, but usually twice that. The reason being is their customers pay not enormous amounts of money, around £23-25 although u can now get the pocket Raspberry Pi p2p VPN for around £42 a year,The higher price is that the VPN and its data is held in a card which slots into the raspberry pi, thus out again w no loss of data, making it secure as hell that way, also the Swiss company Unseen.is that make the raspberry pi and another hardware VPN naturally have the tightest privacy in the world as they , so far, have yet to yield to EU pressure and threats of this economic block and so on.The Swiss provide most of the worlds topmost secure online systems, usually free or for a very small fee. I use both of their Unseen chat service and their Zimbra End-to-End Encrypted Email message service , also w the URL Unseen.is. Aswell as that I use PROTONMAIL.ch which is another end-to-end encryption service which is extremely secure especially when combined with a 'Fort Knox' (lol) {their term not mine} password from randomkeygen.com; refresh the page to get more random pws. Mine is strong enough for root or admin strength keys. I use that strength for everything, google, FB, twitter, basically anything where I have sensitive data, although I have zero to hide, I have plenty that's noones business but mine and the person I'm in touch with online. One large problem I'm finding is 99% of my online friends are American, and President-Elect Donald Trump wants to not only legally FORCE Apple to build into its sourcecode a 'backdoor' which can be used by the police to bypass TOUCH ID and pass codes. He doesn't realise it gives the hacking community exactly the same powers but he's trying to fast track the Bill which allows police forces to go to a website and find a forum of judges in favour of his dismantling of the backbone of their 4th Amendment, pick one and get said judge to sign off on a warrant for a person they know nothing of thus allowing the FBI to use all possible means to surveil the populous , semi-en-Mass or individually by essentially using the techniques that they're looking to put people in hail for , hacking, to get into backdoors in systems and monitor online data from origin to destination which wd put thousands of TOR bridge builders at legal risk too, but I imagine if they're not American itll be hard work getting their home govts to follow Trump like lapdogs. Except Britain of course who is attempting to bring in the Investigatory Powers Bill 2016 (I believe Digital has been prefixed to the Bills name now) .Thankyou Theresa "Will, not" May.
http://services.parliament.uk/bills/2015-16/investigatorypowers.html
so yes, my question is where, as a leading ISP ,do PlusNet stand on the issue of handing over your clients private (and in some cases, lifethreatening ; should it be leaked before it's fully collated and ready to be 'leaked' slowly to the right sources)information garnered from VPNs??Although a sizeable chunk will be encrypted.. We've all heard of Edward Snowden (hero) and Julian Assange (self publicist and really more in it for the money)? Snowden has lost literally everything for the information he came across and leaked in the interest of humanity, Assange has admittedly had a hard time and faces jail time in the US but he's also made an awful lot of money from the traffic through WikiLeaks.
i think the next 4years will see a degradation in personal privacy , a possible mass deportation of Muslims with the still active Natioanal Security Entry-Exit Registration System.
"President George W. Bush and Dick Cheney’s administration launched NSEERS in 2002. It required men from 25 countries to register when they entered the country and then check-in regularly with immigration officials. The registry was not officially a Muslim one, but 24 of the 25 targeted countries were ones with majority Muslim populations.2 Supporters claimed the program was necessary for national security, but in reality, NSEERS was a program that profiled Muslims, subjected them to detention and deportation, and damaged and hollowed out their communities. Not a single person on the registry was ever convicted of a terrorism-related crime, but in only the first year of the program, the government started deportation proceedings on more than 13,000 people." (Source Credo.com)
i know this post went off on several tangents but essentially they're linked in together.

Plusnet will soon be actively collecting all websites that you visit on behalf of a number of government organisations.
The data is kept for one year and I don't believe that the government needs Plusnet's permission to help themselves to this data.
Of course, if all websites are accessed via VPN or even a web proxy, then that's all that Plusnet will collect.
Could you explain how the Raspberry Pi VPN works?
It needs to be outside the UK to have a chance of escaping the snoopers charter.

I just read the link posted in ur message and feel the need now more than ever to utilise TOR , or TOR configured browsers (I currently use Red Onion Browser; TOR configured).
The "terrorism threat" is always thrown out in government rhetoric when giving their answers to why such types of Bills need to exist. I also find the idea of PlusNet saving my web history for 1year extremely disturbing (but it's an ISP so they have their hands tied). My email addresses are gmail for pointless guff, and Unseen.is or ProtonMail.ch; both services based , or use Swiss based servers to route their online traffic as Switzerland has u doubtedly the worlds most relaxed Internet Privacy Laws.
This kind of Bill having been passed is akin to telling ones child not to play in the woods behind the creepy old mans house. This only peaks their interest and will encourage them to go n play in those woods. A bad analogy , admittedly, but this "ur data is stored for one year" means that today's traffic is stored for a year. Then tomorrow's traffic is also saved for one year, but that year starts & ends on the date the traffic was sent so it's effectively a "Rolling Surveillance Program". I shouldn't be surprised tbh, firstly Theresa May is a cold blooded [-Censored-], and secondly Trump is pushing identical ;and even more stringent online 'snooping'. I think we can probably see the end of TOR coming soon if Trump succeeds in turning the minds of the lowest common denominator of Americans that voted for the [-Censored-].The wall to 'stop Mexicans illegally entering the USA' (does he realise the extent, amount, length of,and availability to the Mexican tunnel system , largely used by the 3 main drug cartels, Los Zetas, Cartel de Golfo(Guf Cartel; Los Zeta's used to be C.D.G's 'muscle' as it was made up of the Zetas, the best of the best in the Mexican military. They smuggle marijuana and cocaine daily and smuggle ppl Aldo daily,so a wall......it's like building a wall in ur garden to stop moles getting to ur vegetable bed),the NEERS (Nationsl Entry-Exit Registration System) programme , still active but not used since the Bush / Cheney partnership ended when Obama came to office.24 of the 25 countries on the register were predominantly Muslim, and 130,000 ppl were 'relocated' to their country of birth. What these ppl then did re getting a home , job etc is unknown to me at this point, Trump wants to dismantle the MediCare system. It seems he's implementing a fascist regime that concentrates on the highest earning , highest potential populous, and the typical 'All American Family'. It also, though as yet remains unofficial , appears he had Russian help in turning the vote in his favor. Yet pre-voting he claimed if Clinton won he'd call it a rigged vote, but appears(should b in italics ) , that he's done the same .Essentially were all bent over a barrel ready to get [-Censored-] every day. This used to be a great country that I was proud of. I'm no longer proud of England , I think it's a sham and in league w American overt&covert operations against its own people.

Raspberry Pi link. It's a tiny little 'put together urself' computer. It has a motherboard, an LCD screen ,
http://computer.howstuffworks.com/raspberry-pi.htm
The Rasberry Pi also has its own specifically designed VPN which is also the same size as a credit card and fits in the device and can be easily removed if need be. They cost around $50 (£39.34)
Having just googled prices , check this link
Im considering getting one next year, rn I'm limited to an iPad Pro and an iPad Touch 6gen , and an iPad Air2 with a cracked screen that I'm now stuck with😒

I've got a Raspberry Pi - the 'B' version.
But its only got one ethernet port (and 2 USB ports).
Since it's got the same internet facing address as the rest of my LAN, I could use it to provide an encrypted connection to a company WAN address - but not to a random web address of my choosing.
It seems to me that I would have to pay for a proper foreign VPN?

Sorry for the late reply , I was afk
Yes , you might well do but every VPN has servers located in , at minimum, servers in the capital city of most countries , and a lot now have VPN servers in major cities or various countries too. So even though you're purchasing a foreign VPN , you cd still have it set to a London server ; which is obviously the server you want otherwise a lot of your content will be blocked as it will assume your in , for example , New York or Berlin.
I'd say that if you have any further queries , just to make sure try the Raspberry support team. My VPN which is has servers all over the world so I can appear to b in Hong Kong at 1pm GMT then Amsterdam at 2pm GMT then East coast USA at 3pm GMT etc. Wether the VPN is foreign or not isn't really the issue. Just DONT get a free one as you trade the IP issue(fake external ip) with an agreement that you "OK" to upon installation of most,if not all of your traffic data for 'work to improve our service for the customer' .
My VPN cost me £23 per year but I had to pay in USD ($) do I guess you cd say that was a foreign VPN. But it seemed far more concentrated on Europe than the USA , as it only had West Coast,East Coast.North East, Canada,South America etc.
Just do some research into ur chosen VPN , idk if I'm allowed to recommend a VPN but the one I use immediately blocks phishing sites that r registered to the ATSMO company(basically a list of known websites collected n collated by various reputable online companies so wen u get a redirect during for instance waiting for ur movie to download on putlockers or any other site, you'll get redirected to another webpage. Some of these r malicious and my VPN immediately warns me and basically won't let me proceed w the redirect so using my browsers tabs I find the movie site , press play n it loads up. There's hardly a website that doesn't have redirects of one type or another, some r just part of the programming, some r deliberate malicious phishing sites, my VPN also shows me who's tried Advert tracking me by my online activity and it'll show a kind of spider web graph of quite often interlinking sites. You'll go on FB, follow a link on that and when you check ur VPN data in app, it'll show you in the graph how interconnected these things are. It also gives numbers on how many times , in real time, you've been targeted by ad-tracking, it shows you ur data usage, not in real time, but mine seems to b around 8-10Gb per day, I'd say less recently due to work, and it lists 14 servers in Europe,10 in the USA , 3 in Asia and 1 in Oceania (Australia, NZ, that part of the world)
hope that was of some help , there is a list of the top 5 vpns which I'd imagine you cd find using a well known search engine and a question like "Top 10/top 5 VPNs"

You need a VPN . It won't and never is built direct into a router for reasons such as age restricted material freely available to under18s.
A VPN is a pice if software you install either from ur android play store or ur iOS App Store.
either way , lots of them offer a free for 7 days option BUT ENSURE UR AUTO RENEW IS SWITCHED OFF or you'll get charged for anything from a month to a year,.
i recommend very highly cyph.ws (Samoa is .ws)
basically it works on the very simple Principle of you telling ur friend ur chatting to u need to go to cyph as it's a secure line , he agrees and waits. You then type in cyph.ws and the lrocesss begins , it'll do its thing spinning a new cyph then it brings up a link . Copy n paste that link and send the pasted link to ur friend over FB msngr etc . When he Taps the link you'll be both connected to possibly the most secure chat/video and call service in existence .
NOTE :- THE LINK THAT UR GIVEN ONLY LASTS FOR APPROX 5-10mins but u can get another .below the link you see a small box w 3dots in ... the dots r middle of box not bottom as mine appear, then an envelope , IGNORE THESE 2. And then finally on the far right is a square w a square behind it. Pressing this us ur best bet as it copies the link on screen. You then paste the link to ur mate and yr in Fort Knox of chat rooms.
randomkeygen.com for unlimited random passwords or keys or varying strength. Fort Knox is the obvious choice, u dint need the last of the 4 & the first 2 are susceptible to brute force etc attacks
Hope this helped a little respect ur concern on VPNs. Get one you'll never look back. Throw TOR into the mix and you as protected as you can be. Rember , 2fa/2step vaperification, VPN , TOR, Avira vault or similar to lock Down photos etc.
This ain't paranoia , with the digital theft bill passed we're all possible to be arrested wen wat we've said becomes classified as dissident action. There needs to be a time limit each saved info is Live for before it is effectively shreddded n burnt.

That's definitely an aspect of VPN's that I hadn't thought of. They are going to track mobile use (even more than they do at present), but I don't use mobile phones - not even an ancient nokia.
I was more interested in router based VPN interfaces - which do exist, which aren't cheap but do lock down your entire LAN.
Something like the super-cheap https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/Computers-Accessories/AR300M-router-300Mbps-OpenWrt-Repeater-OpenVPN-Fals... looks like it might be of interest?

That actually does look very interesting , the link u sent. Not something I'd considered before being that at present I'm only running an iPad Pro. I will b getting a laptop again next year , I want to get back into codeing and finding exploits in large companies systems, and then letting them know. I'm not into getting into backdoors and dumping 2-4Gb of data online , I just want to rehone my abilities that over time have dulled, basically the speed things have moved I'm gonna b starting over, but it's something to do in my spare time.
Thanks again for that, I bookmarked the link for later use.
