Unless things have changed in the last few months, the contract start date with PN is the date your first service 'goes live', not the date you sign up.

Most customers are happy if they feel they are getting what they paid for - unless they can see that other customers are getting the same thing cheaper! Most companies are at fault her hoping that most customers will grumble but stay. I take the "stay" approach but buy as little of the product as is necessary to satisfy my need.
I had a 50% deal with Sky for years but they dropped that to 25%. I dropped Sky Sports. BT sport as an app is however good value with PN.
I was going to leave Scottish Power but was told that (as an existing customer!) I could still get a new customer deal via Uswitch! This week it is house insurance.......
Fortunately I don't have to go out to work so I can take all the time I like to waste these companies time in exchange for the money they waste me!! Hey ho.....

I should have added to my comment - what is particularly daft is giving the customer a better offer AFTER they have left and gone somewhere else. This happened to a good friend with Scottish Power. Additionally my sister will be leaving PN after a long spell as she moved house and got trapped into a "high cost" rate.
