Just one thought:  are you hardwired to your PN router or do you go via wireless?

Re: dear adam or colin or jamesh or moses

Can you try using a cable instead of wireless just for testing and then try the iplayer speedtest again?

If you are using IEEE_802.11B then 3800 is probably the maximum you can expect.

Re: dear adam or colin or jamesh or moses

We'd better check what router you already have, so we can see what wireless you should already be getting...
It might be good if you can also get the wireless stats out of your computer too. If it is windows, then there usually a way you can get the "Status" box up for the network adapter, which will then show you the speed and signal quality.
After all, your stats have said you can download at 6M. It is just the streaming that gets cut to 3M, right?

Re: dear adam or colin or jamesh or moses

Do you have neighbours nearby using wireless for their PC connections?  If they are using the same band as you it can interfere with the WiFi that you are using.
If you suspect that it is usually a simple job to switch to another band on the wireless router.  Personally I bought a wireless access point with detachable antennae, then I bought some bigger antennae with better db gain(?) to overwhelm the neighbour's signal. It's a techniques used by the BT HomeHub, they just blast out at the max legal strength.

Re: dear adam or colin or jamesh or moses

You could try using inSSIDer. That will scan the Wifi environment, so you can see what your laptop is seeing.
That way, if your router is using a channel that clashes with the neighbours, you can reconfigure it *and* get an idea of what a good alternative channel number is.
