If you are using IEEE_802.11B then 3800 is probably the maximum you can expect.

It might be good if you can also get the wireless stats out of your computer too. If it is windows, then there usually a way you can get the "Status" box up for the network adapter, which will then show you the speed and signal quality.
After all, your stats have said you can download at 6M. It is just the streaming that gets cut to 3M, right?

is anyone suggesting that either the pn router or my broadcom wireless in not up to the task
progress is being made txs to you all but its still not solved and i simply cant go back to cables.

If you suspect that it is usually a simple job to switch to another band on the wireless router. Personally I bought a wireless access point with detachable antennae, then I bought some bigger antennae with better db gain(?) to overwhelm the neighbour's signal. It's a techniques used by the BT HomeHub, they just blast out at the max legal strength.

That way, if your router is using a channel that clashes with the neighbours, you can reconfigure it *and* get an idea of what a good alternative channel number is.
