Re: waiting for....

well this morning just about every site I try to visit either takes an age or times out...

Re: waiting for....

I have to agree that this morning is a little slower than usual, but is generally OK.
I have been browsing this morning for about three hours, and only YouTube needed a refresh to get it started but was OK after that.
Your CNCzone site is loading in about eight seconds.
I have been looking as amazon.com (as opposed to amazon.co.uk) and speed there was fine.
eBay, bbc, plusnet, linksys.com, nectar, all seem fairly normal.

Re: waiting for....

well this weekend so far has been the slowest ever - I'd say that about half the sites I try to visit are "un-reachable" and just time-out or at best take the best part of a minute.

Re: waiting for....

Still works for me, although taking about 12 seconds to load today.
I also traced the route to www.cnczone.com to see if there were any problems or delays - but that came back OK too !.

Re: waiting for....

curiously cnczone was one of the better (quicker) sites yesterday with google being by far the worst. Today? all appear to be hunky dory!

Re: waiting for....

I'm glad to hear that things were a little better yesterday, hopefully the same can be said for today!
Next time, can you post a tracert / pathping pre- and post- reboot to ensure you're on a different gateway, and to see if any difference is evident?

Re: waiting for....

ok been taking a look at pathping and I think there's something curious going on. Before I post anything (there's a lot) could someone do me a favour? - try a pathping on:
forum.allaboutcircuits.com
www.machsupport.com/forum
www.cnczone.com/forums
and post the results - just the first bit - you could cntrl C out of the "Computing statistics" bit.
The sites are all safe - the first is an electronics forum, the second a computer controled machinary forum and the third the same sort of thing which you've done anyway. Anyway - just if you fancy.
Thanks

Re: waiting for....

Thanks both - appreciate your help.
OK - I think I was off on a goose chase. The links I have in my bookmarks (firefox) are of course things like this http://www.machsupport.com/forum/index.php rather than just the domain name. So I was pathping'ing these and it didn't matter which of the sites I did, I allways ended up at the same place at the end of the traced route. I thought I had been spoofed but I (think) I now understand that I was just getting the "nxdomain" i.e. the destination of an unknown domain name. Probably makes more sense to you than me but I think I get it.
When I pathping just the domain names (like you did) - I get much the same sort of results. Perhaps a bit slower. FWIW here's the dump.

Re: waiting for....

It was a bit of a rhetorical question really - I was 95% certain you would be using OpenDNS and looking through your old posts I've found confirmation. You are using 208.67.222.222 which is OpenDNS.
OpenDNS is notorious for lying when you give it a duff name to look up, instead it will redirect you to sponsored sites.
I suggest you just use the Google DNS servers 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 (which don't tell lies) in addition to the Plusnet ones. Put the Plusnet ones first as they will normally be faster, the Google servers will then act as a backup of the PN ones are having an off-day.

Re: waiting for....

Hi Jelv - well your way ahead of me - I'd been reading like crazy and had got to the same conclusion as you posted - well a bit anyway!
Where did you find that I was using openDNS though  - just did a search on my own posts and I couldn't find anything (memory like sieve!)
Also - I changed my DNSs (in the router) as per post#1 of this thread at that date - but I guess something was cached locally, because it wasn't doing this on my laptop.
However - I did a DNS (and ARP) cache flush - but no change. Then I rebooted and I'm now where you are i.e. pathping'ing unknown domains returns "Unable to resolve target system name" instead of going to the "unknown name server".
Whether this will make a difference to my site/speed issue - who knows - but I'm glad this one was discovered and sorted thanks to you all.

Try changing your DNS settings to "8.8.4.4" and "208.67.222.222"

set dns as suggested and there appears to be some improvement. I'll watch it for a few days because as I said *sometimes* it's ok anyway.
Thanks all for your help. I'll get back after a few days with a morre meaningful update.
Cheers

Re: waiting for....

Sorry - missed this in your previous post

You are using 208.67.222.222 which is OpenDNS.

However that was what I was advised in post #1 - ah well c'est la vie.
I took those two out this morning before I flushed the cash - also - as I said, my laptop didn't shown the "weird" - results for pathping - so I'm thinking this is all well and good I'll change my DNS to the google ones you suggest but I think this has all been a bit of a red herring as far as my actual OP is concerned.
