CPU Cooling fan

Can anyone confirm the pin outs on a cpu cooling fan please?

2 pin - +5v & ground

3 pin - +5v, +12v & ground

4 pin - +5v, +12v, ground & control/temp sensor

The reason I ask is because I have an HP server that has a 3 pin fan where the motherboard has a 4 pin socket. Two pins appear to be connected together! How would that work?

Thanks. I am still confused how/why the original fan is a three pin one, but the motherboard and indeed the fan has a four pin connector. I've replaced the fan with a four pin one, but despite spinning up, the motherboard reports a fault.
