Ethernet Extension Installation

Hey folks,

I've had my broadband installed for some time now and the router sits in my office however my partner works at the other side of our house and is struggling to maintain a strong connection even with wifi boosters.

I'd like to run an ethernet cable from the router to a socket in the room she works. It might require running it outside the house for the most optimal path.

Is it possible to book an engineer to do this installation for me?

Fix

@wgoodspeed If you want this option, you would have to find your own engineer, OpenReach don't do this.

Re: Ethernet Extension Installation

@wgoodspeed if you have basic DIY skills then you can get kits with all the bits and pieces.

For example https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/143980694414

If you decide to diy then I'd suggest getting a network tester as well https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/365071631119

@wgoodspeed

Look for a local electrican or computer network company to do the work. If external, make sure they use good quality cable.

Re: Ethernet Extension Installation

The route inside the house isnt doable as it crosses multiple rooms and stairs and doorways so would have to be done externally which involves wiring while up a ladder which I don't fancy doing myself 😅

Re: Ethernet Extension Installation

Adding to @wgoodspeed 's reccomendation our external cabling was done by a local Aerial installer so it's worth asking and looking around.

Re: Ethernet Extension Installation

@wgoodspeed if the two locations in the house are on the same electrical circuit then it MIGHT be worth trying Homeplugs

e.g https://www.amazon.co.uk/graphics-intensive-applications-Configuration-MP500-KIT/dp/B09BJT4LLM

Although they claim 1000Mb, they won't achieve that it practice!. If on the same circuit, they will max out at around 150Mb. If on different circuits then don't expect more than 50Mb.

Re: Ethernet Extension Installation

Unfortunately I've tried this and many other forms of extenders but nothing has proved reliable.
