Firefox Crash - Will Not reLoad

Came back from holiday, turned on computer and clicked Firefox icon on taskbar.

It came up wirg a message "Can't load XPCOM" and that was it.  Tried an upgrade and got "installation failed"

I have now spent the best part of two days trawling the web for a solution without success.

My computer runs Windows 7 Professional 32bit which is a clean and tidy interface for an oldie like me with iffy eyesight.

I would prefer not to wipe the disk and start again but there is a lot of junk on it as well as legacy programs that I stil use. Probably a first question ism is there any reliable software (happy to pay for it) that would get rid of ancient clutter?

Second, has any expert here had this problem and solved it?

Currently using Chrome but its offensive adverts are testing ,y mental stability too!

Any advice welcome.

@TeeGee Have a read of this: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1281066 , especially the post from 'cor-el'. No guarantees - it is two years old!

Thanks. Yes I had read it, jumped through all the hoops and no it has NOT fixed the problem!

This seems to have been a problem for quite some tome and it nakes me wonder why Mozilla have done nothing about it.  I do notice now that there are a lot of XPCOM files relating to Photoshop so maybe I should delete that program and see if Firefox loads. Not holding my breath!

@TeeGee Sorry it didn't fix it for you, but I must say I've never had it, and I've been using FF for longer than I care to remember, on 6, maybe 7 different machines.

Re: Firefox Crash - Will Not reLoad

@TeeGee Fellow member of the Oldies Club here, so I know where you're coming from! I held off Windows 10 until a couple of years ago, when I reluctantly uploaded Windows 10 to my nine-year-old HP desktop. The upload/installation went without a hitch. It took a deal of fiddling to get rid of the child's nursery 'tiles' to get the W7 appearance back onscreen and I still think the W7 interface was easier but maybe it's just that I take a long time to get used to new things.

On the upside, W10 has run quietly in the background, updating itself with no problems so far, and I don't give it a thought. Its biggest advantage is its built-in Windows Defender, which independent sites now rate up there with expensive anti-virus. Downside: none that this simple soul can find so far.

As to legacy programs, our 20-year-old copies of Photoshop and QuarkXpress  run perfectly on W10.

As to Firefox, we ditched it last year after countless updates which rearranged our home screen so we had to fiddle about to retrieve the old one, and gizmos such as skins and layouts and features which we don't understand save that we don't need them for our simple requirements. In particular, Firefox would not display our Plusnet accounts so we had to use Edge or Chrome. We have found DuckDuckGo an excellent replacement, it's simple to manage and with better privacy.

In summary, you seem to be in our position of a couple of years ago. Back in your shoes I would do the same things again. By the way, if your computer is getting past it like myself we have a fix for that as well ...

Re: Firefox Crash - Will Not reLoad

@Longliner

We have a lot in common and I do also run W10 from a separate hard drive. I would just like a version of W10 with Explorer like W7 so I can easily find what I am looking for. It does work fine but I would prefer it to be less Lowest Common Denominator for the masses! I also wish I has bought shares in Microsoft 50 years ago.....!
