Re: Identifying a piece of software

Thankyou for that tip. I wonder how much money I have wasted over the years by not unplugging it when out of use.

Well I only "discovered" this about six months ago, just before I bought my current PC. I bought my first PC in around 1996 - so for me, it was 28 years of blissful ignorance. ☹️

@Mr_Paul @penneck

Sometimes the power switch can be in a very awkward position to reach to power off.

I use the Kasa brand of smart plugs for this very reason. They can easily be controlled from a smartphone app.

Mine was - until earlier this year.

After my "discovery", I added a switched extension board that now sits conveniently next to my computer desk.  😀

It's nothing fancy, similar to one of these:

Out of interest, how much power does your Smart Plug consume whilst "off", but presumably listening for a command to switch on again?

Re: Identifying a piece of software

I can't find any data on power consumption if all outlets are off but some sites indicate it to be ~1W.

I also like using them for the surge protection.

"I also like using them for the surge protection."

Yes, I fitted a surge protected mains plug to the distribution board before I fitted it. I have fitted a number of surge protected plugs around our home over the years.

About 3 months ago, I had our wired fuse consumer unit, (great for using PowerLine Adapters, not so good for electrical safety), with the latest version, which not only includes miniature circuit breakers, (great for safety, not so good for PowerLine Adapters!), but also incorporates integral surge protection.
