OpenWRT + HG612 issues

Hi!
Recently switched to PlusNet Unlimited Fibre Extra and decided to use an unlocked HG612 that had lying around. Its WAN configuration is as follows:
Layer2 interface: ptm1/(ptm1_0_1)
WAN connection: Enabled
Service list: INTERNET
Port binding: LAN1
Connection mode: Bridge
Bridge type: IP_Bridged
DHCP transparent transmission: Enabled
WAN 802.1q: Enabled
VLAN ID: 101
WAN 802.1p: Enabled
Value: 0
LAN 802.1q: Disabled
LAN 802.1p: Disabled
Its LAN1 is connected to the OpenWRT WAN port. OpenWRT WAN PPPoE settings are the default ones with the correct username and password. I do get a connection (even though occasionally it does take a while -- I have observed the same on the Hub One) and have Internet access, I get consistently disconnected after random periods of time with the unknown error (USER_REQUEST) or modem hangup messages. The only way I can get to temporarily solve this currently is by rebooting OpenWRT.
Anyone with a similar setup able to shed some like in this regard, please?
Cheers!

hi @kruppemage
When you mention unlocked, does it have the B030SP08 firmware?
https://kitz.co.uk/routers/hg612unlock.htm
Can you log into the HG612 via the LAN2 connection and see the HG612 device status when OpenWRT reports the problem?
What are the typical Line statistics reported by the HG612?
Regards
Richard

Correct. It's using the B030SP08 firmware.
I have also noticed now that while on that USER_REQUEST error pppd complains of Timeout waiting for PADO packets.
With regards to H612, the ptm1.101 connection is always on the Connected status and DSL synchronization status is Up when this occurs. I do see a bunch of CRC/HEC errors, though.
Should I be using IP_Bridged or PPPoe_Bridged for ptm1.101? Seems to work either way.
Thanks for the help!

hi @kruppemage
This blog reports his "Timeout waiting for PADO packets" issue was down to faulty line card in the FTTC cab:
http://www.petephillips.me.uk/blog/2020/08/Timeout-waiting-for-PADO-packets/
If you are getting CRC and HEC errors, it would be worth using DSLstats to record the lines behaviour:
https://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php/board,46.0.html
Re IP_Bridged or PPPoe_Bridged for ptm1.101, I do not know.
My HG612 is stored away as a spare.
I will have to dig it out and see what it defaulted to.
Regrads
Richard

I think the issue might be related to OpenWRT since I've plugged the modem into the Hub One WAN port and it worked without any disconnects whatsoever, though.
I'll have a look into DSLstats.
Thanks!

It maybe related to OpenWRT but my hunch is that it is not.
I am using OpenWRT on an TP-Link Archer A7 router with a VMG1312-B10A in bridge mode and do not have the problem.
Though I have not tried the combination of the HG612 and a router running OpenWRT.
