@corringham

"For a long run (even below 100m) between building's I'd now recommend optical fibre!"

This is something that I have seen recommended on a number of forums, but I have never come across anyone with actual experience of using fibre optic and the relevant terminating equipment!

Do you have any personal experience of this method that you can share?

No, I've not use fibre (yet). I believe that you need expensive equipment to splice fibre or even terminate fibre so I suspect that the way to go would be to use pre-terminated fibre (they are available in various lengths) with the correct plugs already fitted. However, there are several types of fibre, and several types of plug/socket, so you would have to make sure that you were buying the correct ones.

There are companies that will make lengths of fibre on demand. One disadvantage is that it is harder to pull a fibre that has a plug on the end (without damaging it), and you would need larger holes through walls etc.

Pre-terminated fibres would be best in 99% of cases for runs where copper is not appropriate.

Buy a "ruggedised" fibre and carefully protect the ends while running the fibre (use a bit of trunking where needed).

I am the satisfied customer....

I assume that another way to eliminate the introduction of common mode noise problems is to use copper but fit an optical isolator.

In a previous life we used double screened cables for some applications. From memory, the inner screen was only terminated at one end whilst the outer earthed at both ends.
