Quote from: Denzil Network cables are cheap enough it is not worth considering repairing them unless you are a professional who is doing lots of them.
Examples <a href="http://www.ebuyer.com/cat/Cables-and-Tools/subcat/Network-Cables-5m">here</a> and <a href="http://www.cclonline.com/product-categories.asp?category_id=181"> here</a>.
You can also use CAT6cable, and it doesn't have to be yellow.
I borrowed a CAT 6 cable, from my mum which she purchased by mistake (a very well know PC retailer wouldn't refund it) anyhow it has crumpled/melted slightly and now port 4 doesn't work.

Also, cat6 is total overkill for a home user. It's way over priced for what it does and cat5e will hold a Gb connection over the distances within an adverage house easily.
I now have a CAT 5 cable which fits comfortable into port 2 and my laptop so I'm content for now.

You only really want Cat5e if you're pushing things to the limit on speed or distance or both (100 metres at 100 mbit).
And it also works fine at Gigabit speeds in most situations.

My old cable was a CAT 5 but it seems that has died.
All in all very happy with all the helpful bods on here.
Have also replaced the filter on my landline yesterday but that was to try and solve a totally unrelated issue. No doubt I'll be back on here in the summer as I try to learn how to use wi-fi, till then I'll stick with ethernet cable CAT5e.

Disabling it when not in use is the sensible option, and the one which the OP asked for help with.
