Do you have any phone extensions and/or is your hub connected to an extension? If so, remove the front from your BT master socket, you may need to remove two screws. In the back box you will see the test socket. Plug the filter that came with your hub in here connect your hub and see if that fixes the fault that you have on your line.

Yes it is, I have experience of removing extension wiring resulting in a tripling of the download speed..On this occasion replacing the original single outlet faceplate with a correctly wired filtered version resolved the issue. From memory I initially noticed no increased speed but a higher SNR, this was automatically resolved over the following weeks by the DLM

@hunter27 according to the BTw checker , your Downstream handback threshold (MGALS-Minimum Guaranteed Access line speed) is 32Mb. According to your router helpdesk, the downstream rate is well below that!

I suggest you take @Baldrick1 s advice and check for any wiring issues first. If that doesnt show any improvment then call Plusnet and advise them that your speed is still below the MGALS

Sorry for the delay. I have done as requested and removed the front of the socket, connected my router directly to the inside socket with the 2mtr long lead to the router and still only getting 20mbs and 19mbs so no better.

The incoming box is an Openreach MK4. The 2 phone extensions are connected internally to the back of the front plate and the router cable is plugged into the front socket outlet.

I still think there is a fault somewhere other than internally - the low DSL uptime is a clue. Unfortunately, the HUb1 does not permit a full extract of the error log, which would be more informative.

See if anything improves in the next 24/48 hours, @hunter27 , although I have my doubts. What is your current DSL uptime?

Is there any change in the SNR figures reported on the helpdesk when connected to the test socket? If the speed is the same and there's no change in the SNR then you have eliminated the possibility that this is an internal wiring issue.

@hunter27 for a Mk4 faceplate, that is wired incorrectly! Telephone extensions should be wired to the connector on the backplate see here https://www.run-it-direct.co.uk/blog/installing-a-mk4nte5c-combined-socket-14.php

I know this seems wrong (and is different to older faceplates) but it isn't. The connectors on the faceplate are for unfiltered extensions. The MK4 faceplate has contacts on both the upper and lower sides of the plug, the incoming line goes through the lower contacts to the faceplate, through the filter and then back to the backplate through the upper contacts.

If your telephone extensions are wired to the faceplate, they will be unfiltered and will be interfering with the DSL signal

Note that removing the faceplate or correcting the wiring as above MAY not result in an immediate improvment in synch speed. If the line has been banded then the speed will remain the same BUT the noise margin should increase.

I suggest correcting the wiring and then reposting the helpdesk information from the Hub

Hi.  The box was fitted by an Openreach engineer about 6 months ago and before he left he showed us running at 30mbs, but as this is not my line of work I would have thought connecting directly to the rear test socket would test the line directly without any extensions being connected?

Thanks to everyone who has replied, it's taking me all my time to keep up with the suggestions not that I am complaining 🙂 

Where do I find my SNR? I am having to google all the abbreviations 😂

It does BUT as I said earlier , the speed MAY not be affected if the line is capped.

Its line 8 on the helpdesk page, called Noise margin. SNR is short for Signal-to-Noise ratio

Hi MisterW  I apologise, the extensions are connected to the outside front of the rear panel not the rear of the front panel. I have been trying to draw out a plan of  the socket wiring stood on a work bench with a torch in the garage.

The SNR when connected to the test socket is 6.0 / 9.9  and was  6.2 /9.7 in its normal socket.

If that's as shown in my link above then that sounds correct.

That would indicate that the extension wiring isnt affecting the DSL signal then.

In that case as @jab1 suggested earlier, you have an external fault. Call Plusnet and report it, if they claim there's no fault , then point out your speed is below the Handback threshold!

I have just been talking to a very helpful lady from Plusnet who has had me carry out various checks and run several speed checks all coming back at 19mbs so she has arranged for an engineers visit for next week.

UPDATE

PN sent an engineer around but he only works inside the house and didn't find a fault so escalated the fault. Yesterday an Openreach engineer came, said we had around 4.7 volts on the line and managed to reduce it to 0.8v and he said he had the line reset.  He tapped the incoming overhead wire with an extending  pole but it made no difference?  He replaced the Openreach MK4 box with a new one and went to the nearby cabinet to look in there and said he didn't need to come back in the house, the cabinet is almost outside our house and is not full fibre at this location.   We were then disconnected for a few minutes.

The noise margin has changed to 6.3 --6.1 now  from  6.1--9.7

We are getting around 27mbs now so a good improvement but not as good as it used to be.

Sounds better, @hunter27 , but still below your MGALS. I would monitor it for another week or so and see if it improves -- if not, tell PN the problem is still not resolved to your satisfaction.

Just out of interest, can you post a current Help Desk screenshot?
