@Lawrencium103 Do let us know how it goes.
I am happy to report that my landline number has been ported to A&A and my broadband still works. The recommended process worked for me, but it took longer than I expected, and after reading Peter-J’s thread I was nervous that it might all go wrong.
Here's a summary of what happened and when:
Thursday 16 January. “Upgraded” to “Fibre” (ie, SOGEA). Scheduled activation date 21 January.
Tuesday 21 January. Received email from Plusnet stating that my transfer was complete. Landline was still working but stopped working about two hours later. The new product was shown correctly in my account (and at the correct price!), but I noticed a service notice that the Openreach order would complete by midnight on the 22nd. I therefore waited until the 23rd before starting the number port.
Thursday 23 January, 9.45 am. Ordered port of landline to A&A. At the OTS choice screen I selected “recently ceased”. 2 pm received email from A&A that port had been accepted, porting date 29 January.
Wednesday 29 January. Received email from A&A that porting was complete.
I’ve successfully made and received test calls using both Zoiper and Acrobits Softphone. My broadband still works, and I did not receive a “Sorry you’re leaving” email from Plusnet.

Just an FYI, "midnight on the 22nd" is actually the start of the day. To avoid confusion many would state it as 23:59 on the 21st. In reality it's usually done much earlier than that (as you'll have seen from your message from Plusnet), but it's basically meaning that it would happen at sometime on the 21st, so don't come chasing us until the day is over!

Thanks so much for your reply. It's been much appreciated. My error was porting my number and not using "recently ceased" option on OTS. It also seems that the time between the new broadband service being confirmed and the time when one requests a number port doesn't require a longer time than 24 hours.
At the moment, everything is working. Like you I'm using Zoiper and have had lots of fun receiving landline calls , retrieving voicemails via my email account and still using my old handset with the ATA.

@Lawrencium103 I’ve just read the post from Peter-j. It seems I got off lightly. So the ‘ceased line’ option on OTS does not guarantee a trouble-free number porting. Gulp!
