Re: Get your names in quick - YouView Trials

I used to be a BTVision customer 4 years ago.
BTVision at the time streamed a few Sky channels over ADSL.
I then moved to Tiscalli tv who streamed some 40 Sky channels flawlessly over ADSL.
The only reason this is a fibre only product is to get fibre sales up.
Yes you can get a basic youview box for ADSL but if you want any Sky channels, you are being forced onto fibre, and for what reason?
This stinks of dirty tricks, no wonder this is announced AFTER  the old BT guv has taken over PlusNet.
Fibre has been in my area for 18 m onths.
My cab is still not activated.  Why?  BT are saying the council wont give planning permission for a new cab.. after a telephone call, the council informed me planning isnt required.
So I am stuck on ADSL for the forceable future, getting a decent 17meg, more than capable of streaming YouView, yet I am not allowed it.
PlusNet has morphed into BT's mini me at last.

Re: Get your names in quick - YouView Trials

Patience, it's not a fibre only product. It's a fibre only trial. This is not a full product release.
If you had read the actual purpose of the trial, you would have seen that amongst other things, it is to test multicast before the product is released. Multicast is not available via ADSL. It's simple.
That doesn't mean the product won't be available on ADSL when it is released.

Re: Get your names in quick - YouView Trials

FreeView is available on ADSL as a basic catch up service, that I don't want or need.
The extra Sky channels are ONLY AVAILABLE on Fibre for BT, and looking at the trial, and judging by PlusNet using the BT infrastructure, then it will only be offered on Fibre by PlusNet to, which is purely and simply a way of forcing people onto the more expensive Fibre package.
If I knew PlusNet were going going to start using the BT dirty tricks campaign I would never have purchased the 12 month LRS.

Re: Get your names in quick - YouView Trials

I don't see it as a dirty tricks campaign.
I may be totally wrong on this but Tiscali operate their backbone separately to the BT infrastructure and can offer their own services over different systems to the ones that BT use (as can Virgin Media and Talk Talk)
I've had a play with Multicast stuff on my home network (I run a TV server with 5 tuners and I can easily saturate my 100Mb network segment) - it's fun stuff but can be bandwidth intensive. Looking at the bandwidth requirements on SIN511, the SD content is well within limits for the majority of ADSL users but the HD content (10Mb/s video + audio + overheads etc) may cause many peoples connections to struggle.
You have to weigh up on trials the amount of time taken by staff to resolve issues from customers vs the feedback you get. If you trial 100 units to a mix of FTTC and ADSL customers then spend half your time trying to explain to ADSL customers that they don't have enough bandwidth at certain times of day for certain channels you rapidly use up human resources. There may be other reasons it is FTTC only at the moment such as the technology changes involved for the trial - it may be easier on FTTC - pure speculation on this though.
It may even be a directive from BT that only FTTC can be enabled during the trial - it will be interesting to see some clarification from Plusnet over the reasons that FTTC is the platform of choice for the trial.
I suggest we hold off the kneejerk reactions for the moment until we've had a reasonable explanation from PN as to why it is FTTC only at the moment and whether they will be rolling out to both ADSL / FTTC in the future.

Can anyone remember how long it said it would be before they get back to you to say you've been accepted on the trial?
Has anyone who applied been accepted yet?

Re: Get your names in quick - YouView Trials

Already on the Plusnet unlimited FTTP trial, have applied as this would be a good chance to run the two trials simultaneously. Smiley

One to two weeks.

Re: Get your names in quick - YouView Trials

got an email yesterday and signed up about 2am this morning when I got home and checked emails. Some interesting questions in there to weed out some users,
Plusnet router users and non Plusnet router users
Direct connection via cat5 cable or use of mains adaptors for connection to router
heavy or low users of catch up TV
Area of UK you live in (so not all people in same area)
Subscribe to Sky or Cable service

Are they looking for curtain combinations of above and other criteria to get a balance mix of users and spread across UK for checking stability of service over network. So I wonder if it's a first come first served or first to meet curtain Plusnet criteria pool .
Any way fingers crossed I meet what ever the are looking for and got in on time?

Re: Get your names in quick - YouView Trials

I probably don't tick too many of the boxes then lol. I have my router in the attic and would need homeplugs (although I have other workarounds with access points). I'm also running DD-WRT on a third party router - again not a major issue but I wouldn't expect them to support me if there were issues. I also don't subscribe to Sky although I have built my own home PVR / Home theatre system from scratch and have been running my own MythTV / HTS Headend system for the past 7 years  Grin
On the plus side, if Plusnet want someone with the most obscure system to test it on, I'm probably the right person  Cheesy

Once these are complete we will get back to you within a few weeks to confirm if you are on the trial.

Yep, it's probably not going to be until the new year that we'll get back to you.

It says in the email I had that it will be first come first served , I hope so as that would mean I've got a very good chance of getting in on the trial as I completed the application when there had only been a few page views of this thread.
I'll  hold back on my shopping plans for a new PVR system  until I find out in January if I'm on the trial , Chris has answered above a question I was going to post on how long it would be before we know if we're on or not.

Probably best to answer the questions with answers that you think are wanted.
It's mostly not verifiable info anyway.
