Hide email address from public, ticking its box in your profile doesn't in fact Hide the email but make it viewable

Are you sure? I currently have the box ticked - check my profile.

Re: Profile setting: Hide email address from public working backwards

I get an Email User icon on Gus's profile and a hidden on jelv's.  Mine is set to hide my address.  Can anyone see mine?

Re: Profile setting: Hide email address from public working backwards

Hmm. It is a bit odd. All of our email addresses are hidden, but there is a link below mine & Gus's names that allows email to be sent to us through the forum, without revealing our actual email address to the sender (or anyone else browsing).
So there must be another setting somewhere on the profile that controls that.
I didn't see one on my profile - I'll go & have another look.
Edit: Nope, I've had another look & I'm still stumped. I still can't see what controls the email icon display. I'm reluctant to take the tick out of the 'email address hidden' box, even for trial purposes!

Re: Profile setting: Hide email address from public working backwards

Whether you can see the actual email address or whether you get the option send via the forums is something that is set globally for the forums - Plusnet have sensibily set it for the safer option.
If the box is unchecked you can be emailed via the forums - checked and you cant.
NB It always shows the ability to email yourself irrespective of the setting - is that what is causing the confusion?
Edit: Having set the option you need someone else to check it for you.

Maybe that's why I'm confused. jelv, can you confirm that you can't email me?

Re: Profile setting: Hide email address from public working backwards

Thanks, James. That's me sorted then.
That just leaves us with Gus's original problem, because we can send him email & he reckons he's got the same setting as the rest of us.

Re: Profile setting: Hide email address from public working backwards

To clarify.
Does this mean that the tick box "Hide email address from public?" actually doesn't do that but its function is "Not allow members to email you" or have I misunderstood

Re: Profile setting: Hide email address from public working backwards

My understanding of it is when "Hide email address from public?" is ticked the email part of the profile shows as hidden, and when it isn't it shows as an "email user" button, that opens up a form for the forums to send an email to the user without showing the sender the reciprients email address.

If so would it be an idea to get the wording changed

I'm sure if your email is hidden, it still shows for you...

I imagine that the complication is that different wording would be needed against this setting, depending on the global setting that determines how this switch works. See jelv's post above.
Not that that should be beyond the capabilities of the software - there seem to be a lot of other conditional display options.
It is confusing though.
We are still no nearer answering Gus's question though, which in the light of these explanations becomes 'why we can email him via the forum despite him having ticked the box?'

Re: Profile setting: Hide email address from public working backwards

That's not how I read Gus's last post James, but I can see you could interpret it that way. We will have to await confirmation of the current 'tick' status.  Smiley
