Can't link my Plusnet email account to New Outlook

Hi

I am trying to start the New Outlook for Gmail and Plusnet emails.  No difficulty with Gmail but am finding it impossible with the Plusnet account.  All OK until it asks you to "Sync Your IMAP Account" and you have to put in a password.  I tried my webmail password (which I checked was working) and it wouldn't accept.  Tried my Plusnet password/email address etc but nothing would work.  Plusnet Technical confirmed it should be the webmail password - so why not accepting?Huh

Has anyone else had difficulty with this please?

Re: Can't link my Plusnet email account to New Outlook

@LizMac42

Microsoft outlook sometimes makes up the incoming and outgoing server names, make sure they are correct

For IMAP they should be

IMAP: imap.plus.net port 993 encryption SSL/TLS
SMTP: relay.plus.net port 587 encryption STARTTLS
User name (authentication) configured on BOTH incoming and outgoing servers
Default mailbox accountname
Secondary mailbox accountname+mailboxname

HTH

Re: Can't link my Plusnet email account to New Outlook

sorry - didn't know there was a reply - no notification.  Thank you - will try these numbers in the Outlook login though I know for sure my password was correct as I logged out of Plusnet Members and logged in successfully with it.  Passwords are a plague - we now have AI but still chained to these [-Censored-] passwords!!

Re: Can't link my Plusnet email account to New Outlook

Thank you for your help - I left the password blank and tried entering all the incoming and outgoing configuration you suggested but all were the same as Outlook was giving.  Anyway I still got the message 'something is wrong' so obviously that password is important.

I read of others on this forum who are having the same problem as me and I agree with one of them who thought that as Plusnet were ending their email they need to give more help on how to do this.  Nobody I speak to at Plusnet have a clue.  One told me they have no training with email!!

I am now getting the New Outlook coming up every time I access email but Gmail is still the only one working.  I don't know how much longer we will be able to toggle back to old Outlook.  I sent an email to Outlook Support but got no reply apart from an email asking me to review Microsoft Support --Ha ha!

Re: Can't link my Plusnet email account to New Outlook

New Outlook seems to have a mind of its own when it comes to Plusnet email accounts. I have six (various aliases etc) and while four of then set up with little issue once I input the correct servers etc., two of then will not do so. All six work on PN webmail (and they all worked on Windows Mail) and they all work on Thundertbird. I have given up trying to get the se two to work on Outlook. In any event I have almost divested myself of any need to use PN email and only keep it going in case of any stray incoming mail from old contacts who do not have my more up to date contact details.

Re: Can't link my Plusnet email account to New Outlook

@LizMac42

I guess by "Outlook" here you are referring to the ghastly cut down thing which ships with Windows11?

There are a multitude of things called "Outlook" and they are far from being the same.

Which server reports an error - IMAP / POP3 (inbound) or SMTP (outbound)?

Can you log into the mailbox using webmail?

Reset email password

If you are not able to login to the email address using webmail, then it is likely that your email address has been identified as being compromised and has had its password changed. Where email address passwords have been changed to protect the integrity of the service, the Plusnet account password is left unchanged.

Which ISP are you with, Plusnet or one of the other / legacy vISPs?

Plusnet / Force9 / FreeOnline users can only change the password on the DEFAULT email address by changing the password on the user ACCOUNT through the user portal. You can change the password on a secondary mailbox using the Manage My Mail options in the user portal.

Brightview users (Madasafish / FreeNetName / GlobalNet / IC24 / ICScotland / Dialstart / Totalise) logging into webmail should use their full email address. Use the MAAF user portal to update the password on the default email address (change the account password) and use this MAAF guide to change the password on a secondary mailbox address. If you cannot recall the account password, you will need to contact support ... because the account password change process sends an email to the mailbox you cannot now access.

DO NOT USE THE SAME PASSWORD AGAIN for that would allow the continued exploitation of the account. The new password should be cryptic and not one used before.

Note that changing the account password will change the password used for logging on to the relevant user portal. If your email service is NOT a retained legacy service (one associated with a retired internet service account), then the password required by the router to connect to the internet will be changed too. If the router is a Hub Zero or a Hub One supplied by Plusnet it should update automatically. If not, you will need to log into the router, drop the connection, change the password yourself and reconnect.

On the assumption that the email address password has been compromised, I strongly recommend that wherever you have used that email address / password combination as access credentials to services such as Amazon, Netflix, eBay etc., that you also change the passwords on those service as well.

Re: Can't link my Plusnet email account to New Outlook

No I have been struggling with this. I can set up, synch and access my Plusnet email via Outlook 365 and via Microsoft Mail without any problem but as soon as I toggle from either of those to New Outlook it wants me to enter a password but then has wrong settings for IMAP account and when I correct them it fails to connect with the dreaded 'you may need an app password' message. Tried all the various settings recommended on various fault threads in this community and MS support community but nothing works. Frustrating!!

@Hilaryjd I can't help you with this, unfortunately, as I don't use Microsoft products - out of choice - but as you have discovered the new, improved' Outlook is anything but improved.

Outlook has been termed 'Outhouse' in the past.

Re: Can't link my Plusnet email account to New Outlook

I also am having problems with this.  Plusnet have checked my settings and password and say these are correct and must be a problem with Outlook.  I have been on Outlook site and they say you may need to use an App password when adding an a/c to Outlook.  They say to contact your email provider to get the App password.  The provider should provide instructions on how to generate the App password to use in third party email apps such as Outlook.  I haven't contacted Plusnet yet about this as I would have expected them to tell me about this when I rang them last week.  I wondered if anyone else had heard of this.

Re: Can't link my Plusnet email account to New Outlook

@Townman  MS are talking 'rubbish' here? From what I have skimmed through on a couple of posts around this subject, it is all to do with 2FA, and mandated by MS. There appear to be instructions on how to do this from Microsoft themselves, but they all seem to revolve around having a 365 account.

Re: Can't link my Plusnet email account to New Outlook

Indeed, some email SERVERS require 2FA to connect an email client, but that does not apply to Plusnet’s email servers.

I did not like the old Win10 mail client (it was shoddy) and I’ve not attempted to use the new one. Guess I will need to kick its tyres to see what’s happening.

Re: Can't link my Plusnet email account to New Outlook

@Townman I've just had a play with the new Outlook and have put a post on the other thread here https://community.plus.net/t5/Email/New-Microsoft-Outlook/m-p/1979436#M47034

It seems the problem may be that it assumes that the email address is the username for the incoming & outgoing servers and even worse (AFAICS) provides no way to enter a separate username!

So it will work for secondary mailboxes but not for the primary.
