Frustrations of Getting Plusnet Emails via Outlook

I spent several early morning hours trying to get Plusnet emails via Outlook (IMAP). I either get login error when Outlook tests the settings or the server times out.

I'm using the settings on this link https://www.plus.net/help/email-guides/how-to-set-up-plusnet-email/

and are setting via control panel on Windows 10.

Help!

The outgoing server requires STARTTLS as well as the incoming server.

Re: Frustrations of Getting Plusnet Emails via Outlook

The email setup help page is deeply confusing - I have made multiple requests for it to be corrected.

Incoming - imap.plus.net port 993 encryption TLS/SSL

Outgoing - relay.plus.net port 587 encryption STARTTLS

Outgoing server should use authentication - same login details as the inbound server.

@Townman I have tried your suggest settings and are still getting server timeout even if I set timeout for max period 10 mins.

Re: Frustrations of Getting Plusnet Emails via Outlook

Unless there is a queued email with a massive attachment (check all folders) then I’d look towards a connectivity issue. Is the rest of your internet activity working without issues?

What else is using your internet concurrently?

Other than a time out, is Outlook connecting to the server - can you query the IMAP folder structure?

how many emails are there in the inbox (use webmail to inspect).

@Townman Have put my responses in blue to the points you raised.

What else is using your internet concurrently? 2x mobile phone,  Amazon Fire Stick & Laptop I'm trying to set

Other than a time out, is Outlook connecting to the server - can you query the IMAP folder structure? How do I do this as Microsoft instructions are not too clear.

how many emails are there in the inbox (use webmail to inspect). Inbox 84; Drafts 9; All other folders empty

I also use Thunderbird with POP3 and that has no problems downloading emails

Re: Frustrations of Getting Plusnet Emails via Outlook

Anyone should I be logging my issue with Plusnet support?

I would say not - they do not as a rule have dedicated staff for this . @Townman probably has more knowledge of this kind of thing than the whole of the PN support team.

Re: Frustrations of Getting Plusnet Emails via Outlook

@Intcomp

This is what your settings should look like...

2022-12-14 112123 IMAP Settings.png

Username:

  • Default mailbox - <plusnet_account_id>
  • Secondary mailbox - <plusnet_account_id>+<mailboxname>

Query IMAP folders...

  • Right click on the inbox folder in the left hand panel
  • Click "IMAP folders..."
  • Click the QUERY button
  • Click OK

Can you confirm that the account sets up without any issue in Outlook365?
