Email and home address visible from check my ip site

Hi All

I know these “check my ip” sites provide detail of ISP, region, device, browser, ios blah blah. However, a friend tried it with their device (Plusnet is the isp) and saw their email address when they drilled down the isp no.

That can’t be right, can it? Why would Plusnet operate any differently to other isps?

Thanks

If they have a static IP , then the reverse DNS for their public IP will show <accountname>.plus.com

So if they have dynamic (like most), the reverse DNS won’t show?

Second question- even if it was static, would that reverse dnd only be visible to him? Ie no one else? Ie somehow available through posting on social media, forums etc.

Many thanks again

The reverse DNS for a dynamic IP shows as <ipaddress>.dyn.plus.net

The reverse DNS is available to anyone who knows (or can detect) the public IP address.

If it is due to a static IP rDNS then its possible for your friend to get a it changed to <ip address>.plus.com

Re: Email and home address visible from check my ip site

Thanks. V clear and constructive. I won’t be able to see him for a few days? I think he must have static ip assigned, as was adamant his email was showing on one of the check my ip results page. I guess he must have highlighted the ip to generate it?Huh

Moving forward, wouldn’t it be easier just to change device settings to automatic?

Thanks for your time and expertise.

Re: Email and home address visible from check my ip site

Apologies-meant to ask about changing static ip:

Will he need to approach Plusnet to do that?
If he changes it as suggested, will that prevent the email showing via reverse dns etc?

He will need to ask Plusnet to change the rDNS
