Speed settling down period?

Hey all - got plusnet 900 three weeks ago (new superfast fibre broadband), three people in house and almost only two users at same time. I can be standing right at my router as I am just now, no other devices being actively used, and my speed can vary second to second from 25mpps to 400mpps - is this normal? I’m aware of the “up to” 900mpps and know it’s an estimate, but having bought the highest package and having the most up to date fibre installed, am feeling this can’t be right - advise would be appreciated!

@DaisyW  Wi-Fi speeds are totally unpredictable and can vary, as you have found out. To test your actual speeds you must use a direct ethernet connection to your router.

Re: Speed settling down period?

@DaisyW How old is the machine displaying these low figures? It could be that the NIC isn't capable of handling the higher speeds.

Re: Speed settling down period?

All hardware being used is new (within a year) ie iphone14 pro max etc. Doesn’t matter what is used, the speeds vary enormously, but is this normal? If it is then grand, I just think that low double figures mpps on a 900 contract seems low, thanks for the advice

Re: Speed settling down period?

If all kit is that new, I would expect it to be capable of handling the higher speeds, but as I'm still on FTTC, I haven't been able, or had the need, to really look at what FTTP is supposed to be able to do.

There are some Community members who have more knowledge/experience, but it depends if they look at this topic.

Re: Speed settling down period?

You'll struggle to get more than 400Mb wireless UNLESS both client and router are Wifi 6 devices. The PN Hub 2 is only Wifi 5 and therefore ~400Mb is about the best you can get wireless. Also as @RealAleMadrid says wifi speeds can be seriously affected by external factors such as adjacent wifi networks. Wifi performance can often be improved by scanning for adjacent wifi networks using a Wifi analyzer app and manually changing your router wireless channel  to one that has least interference from adjacent networks.
