Do you have a current VOIP provider? If so, what do they recommend?
Are you thinking about moving to a VOIP provider? If so, what do they recommend.
Finally, if just looking to get set up for the end of PSTN consider waiting until you have to change. Then look at what's available and / or your chosen suppliers equipment.
Hi Brian,
Yes, I've ordered VoIP (so not waiting for end of PSTN) through Andrews & Arnold. The service goes live with my existing number in 6 days. They sell their own equipment but it's a bit pricey so...
Thanks
James

You are aware that the transfer of your phone number will automatically trigger the closure of your Plusnet broadband account and trigger early termination charges if you are still under contract?
Edit
I believe that it’s possible to keep your account open if you are on the defunct FTTP Trial.

@JamesCRocks li'd look on ebay for a gigaset n300ip , preferably with a handset.
A & a setup details are here https://support.aa.net.uk/VoIP_Phones_-_Gigaset_N300

Yeah, I'm still with PlusNet, just switched to VoIP

@JamesCRocks Not sure you fully understand what @Baldrick1 is trying to tell you. An upgrade to FTTP is likely to lose your phone number so it cannot be ported to a VoiP supplier.
I would have no faith in the proposed OFCOM ruling that ISPs will allow numbers to be available to be ported for 31 days. Plusnet have said nothing about implementing this rule so it looks like they are ignoring it.☹️

Let me explain a little more.
Your Plusnet Internet connection is currently. unless you are on Full Fibre (FTTP), along with your phone, supplied over a copper circuit provided by BT. My understanding, put in simple terms, is that it should be assumed that this line is identified by the phone number assigned to it. Your internet connection is carried on that line. If that telephone number is removed from the line and no other action taken then the physical line can be assumed to be no longer in service, so the Internet connection will disappear and your Plusnet phone and Internet service will be cancelled. You can't use a Voice over Internet ATA with no Internet.
As @RealAleMadrid says, there is supposed to be a new requirement that will allow the phone number to be ported out but nothing is currently in place to do this by many ISP's including Plusnet. Ofcom are on the case.

in reality , porting a number that's been ceased , probably doesn't involve Plusnet. Once the number is ceased its returned to the Rangeholder and quarantined. Since PN are not the rangeholder ( is likely BT Retail, Sky or Talktalk for most numbers ) then any porting requirement will only involve the rangeholder and the CP requesting the port.

Not arguing at all, I was trying to explain it in simple terms. I have no idea how the Plusnet back office system works but assume that something has to be done to disassociate the broadband service from the phone number. I would think that this is exercising many minds as we head into SOGEA.
The bottom line is that my current understanding is that at present you can't port your phone number away from a Plusnet ADSL or FTTC service without triggering the cancellation of both the phone and broadband service.

@RealAleMadrid @MisterW @Baldrick1
Don't worry folks, it appears @JamesCRocks has things in hand regarding porting his number away from PN, see his other thread https://community.plus.net/t5/Everything-else/VOIP-Providers/m-p/1912611
EDIT: Caveat; I'm assuming he's followed the advice given at post #5 of that thread (which he 'thanked').

And I don't see that changing! What will change is the ability to port the number after its ceased, which is not currently possible.

Yeah, I get all that. I'm already on VoIP (with PlusNet) and A&A have told me they have got my old number...
We are pleased to confirm that the above port has been accepted.
Main Billing Number: xxxxxxxxxxx
Porting Date: 13/04/2023
Porting Time: 10:00
....so I have internet and, in about 5 days, my old number will be ported. Now I am just trying to sort out the best (and most cost effective) device to access the VoIP service using our existing DECT quad cordless phones 😁

@JamesCRocks So is your full fibre service a new Plusnet Account, that is not an upgrade from FTTC. Do you have two accounts active at the moment, 1 Full fibre and 1 FTTC?
