Fibre 74 not reaching speed

I’ve routinely tested my full fibre speed and it’s not even reaching 50, it’s nowhere near 74. I’ve used the text help option that said there’s no issue with the line.
I’ve been sent upgrade offer but I don’t feel I’m getting any service. Anyone else had the same?

Re: Fibre 74 not reaching speed

@jenniferedge Full Fibre should give you the advertised speed (or a tiny bit more). What are you using to test, wired or wireless connection?

Can you post the result of speed test from this site, please - https://www.speedtest.net/ - a screen shot would be helpful.

Re: Fibre 74 not reaching speed

@jenniferedge

Do your "smart light bulbs" or other IoT devices happen to use 802.11g or 802.11a WiFi to connect to your router ?

as typically a WiFi channel will scale the bandwidth down to the speed of the slowest connected device

and your result of 50Mbps is about what might be expected when the channel has scaled to a 802.11g 54Mb limitation.

Did you ever get a WiFi extender to allow you to split the 2.4Ghz and 5GHz bands to have different SSIDs ?

Re: Fibre 74 not reaching speed

I’m using wireless as I don’t have any wired options like a laptop. I use my phone, tablet and fire stick.
Used the site and it says 59 tonight, can’t seem to add a picture here, I’ve added to my public album.

Re: Fibre 74 not reaching speed

Yes there’s one smart bulb connected. I didn’t know it would affect speed.

No I’ve not got a WiFi extender, do you have a recommendation? Or should I just disconnect the bulb?

Re: Fibre 74 not reaching speed

Ah - more information, which throws more light on the question. If you are using wireless devices, you may not get full speed, as no-one can guarantee it - there are too many variables involved - the age of the device(s), their capabilities, distance from the Hub, obstructions to the signal, to name but a few.

I can't recommend an extender - never used one - but you could try disconnecting the bulb and see if it has any effect, although note my comments above.

On each of those devices, look in the WiFi settings, and see if you can 'force' the WiFi to always connect to the 5GHz band.

If you got all your devices on to the 5GHz band, then your 2.4GHz (only) smart bulb can stay where it is.

Re: Fibre 74 not reaching speed

I don't know about the firestick - are they 5Ghz capable?, but all my wireless devices - laptop/iPad/iPhone/Freesat box automatically connect to 5Ghz - and stay there, while at home.

Yes, but apparently there is no setting to 'force' one band or the other when the SSID is the same on both bands !

Cheers, @outcast , I asked simply because I've never had one, so didn't know - if I don't need extra information in my ageing brain, I tend not o look for it. 😀

Re: Fibre 74 not reaching speed

@jab1  no I've never looked at these either !

I've just been looking these things up in the last five minutes.

Smart light bulbs all seem to be limited to only 2.4GHz WiFi band.

The Fire Stick seems to do both bands, but you'd normally choose bands by having different SSIDs on the router.

I would imagine that having the Fire Stick if stuck on 2.4GHz at 50Mbps, wouldn't be a bottleneck.

Hopefully the 'tablet' and 'phone' have more advanced WiFi band settings,

otherwise the answer will need to involve somehow splitting the WiFi band SSIDs.

I wonder why Plusnet seem reluctant to update the Hub Two firmware to have separate WiFi band SSIDs,

it would solve so many wireless related queries asked on this forum, and doesn't feel like it would be much of an effort !.

While they are at it, they could include smart queuing, to overcome the bufferbloat problem on slow upload connections

It might get stuck on 2.4 if I had one - my 7530 only has the one SSID, although I think I can 'split' it - never really looked as everything just 'works', and I don't like introducing un-needed complications if I don't have to.

@jenniferedge

When you reply to a post several icons appear above the text window. This one allows you to add a picture inline.

Note if using a phone it may be different.

Re: Fibre 74 not reaching speed

... on a mobile device you'd probably need to go in to the browser settings to choose "desktop site" mode for this site, for the icons to be displayed correctly.
