Full Fibre slow

Hi, just had full fibre 145 installed, it was running great, next day really slow. Rebooted router and speeds back up close to 145. Been out for the day, checked again this afternoon and it’s slow again, like sub 30mps. Could it be the router is on its way out? Something I’m missing in setup?

Have you tried testing using a wired connection as well as wireless?

At a glance, most of your wireless devices are connected to a 2.4GHz wireless channel. 

The 2.4GHz Wi-Fi band will offer throuhgout speeds not much north of ~70mbps at best, and I can see from your screenshot that the device you tested from did not have an optimal signal.

Where is your hub situated in relation to the devices you're testing from? Any obstructions in the way?

Thanks for the reply Bob, a bit of a newbie as regards full fibre! Router was downstairs in the lounge, but according to the openreach engineer the only viable option to get fibre into the house was into an upstairs bedroom. Just done a Speedtest a few minutes ago and it was back up at 145, though dropped again. Not tried a wired connection as yet, I’ll try changing to a different WiFi band

With any product it is the speed at the router which determines whether or not the line is performing as expected. This is why a wired speed test is always required if at all possible.

 

If the wired speed is as expected then it becomes a WiFi problem which isn't PN's responsibility. They, like members on this board, can only offer advice as to possible causes - equipment issues or interference.

 

Just to confirm if your ONT is upstairs have you got an ethernet connection to the router downstairs?

Or is the router upstairs with the ONT and it's getting wireless to work downstairs that's the problem?

A Cat 5e or higher Ethernet cable between the ONT and the router, installed back downstairs might solve you problem. For reliable communications, especially on high speed FTTP services, Ethernet should always be the first choice whenever practicable.

Thanks for the reply, when the ONT was installed in the upstairs spare room (now the office!} the router was relocated to that room. Being bit of a newbie here, did a quick speed check on a different device (iPhone) rather than my rather aged iPad and speeds are fine! All the same I’ll invest in a WiFi extender for downstairs anyway, thanks everyone for your help, really appreciated!!

As you now have full fibre it's worth considering investing a bit of money to get a good signal aroung the house. What works for one house may not work in another.

 

Consider power line adapters with a WiFi access point. You need to ensure you get a model with high enough capacity for full fibre and that they are known to work accross different power circuits.

 

WiFi extenders or mesh set ups might also do the trick.

 

Finally, consider running an ethernet cable from upstairs to downstairs via the outside wall. External grade cable with ethernet wall sockets at either end and you're sorted. Full speed available downstairs for what ever WiFi access point you connect. Would cost a bit more but it's future proofed.
