Line down and now reconnected with totally different speeds

Our line dropped yesterday (we were away from home) and was off for most of the day but then reconnected.

Those two extra blips were my brother restarting the router and having problems connecting.

Then overnight it dropped twice more

And has now reconnected with a 48Mb down (which is down slightly from its max of about 53) but the up has gone up from 7Mb to 10. - in all the time I've had this line it's never been more than 7 and a bit up.

Anyone got any idea what might have happened?

And the router shows

Re: Line down and now reconnected with totally different speeds

Potentially overnight maintenance but it's hard to tell as line tests aren't showing any issues.

Currently the latest DLM profile we have from 31.03.22 is "Downstream: 0.128M-80M3dB with Retransmission (High). Upstream: 0.128M-20M with no error protection" but if you can prod me on Sunday, we should have an updated profile and if your speed's banded, which I suspect it might be, looking at that sync speed, I can reset your line.

From 31st October 2022, I no longer have a regular presence here as I’ve moved on to a new role.

Re: Line down and now reconnected with totally different speeds

The thing is that the download speed has been, since I moved to using the VR600, between 42 and 52 - drifting slowly up and then dropping. The upload however has never really gone much over 7 and a bit until this outage, and 7 and a bit was pretty much what PN said it would be when I moved onto Fibre years ago as I'm rather a long way from the cabinet

Your broadband service

  • Product: Unlimited Fibre Extra
  • Estimated Download Range: 38 - 39Mbps
  • Estimated Upload Range: 6 - 8Mbps
  • Minimum Guaranteed Speed: 32Mbps
  • Current Line Speed (Download): 44Mbps

Running a cli speed test from a wired connection.

steve@nyman:~$ speedtest
Retrieving speedtest.net configuration...
Testing from Plusnet .
Retrieving speedtest.net server list...
Selecting best server based on ping...
Hosted by Cerberus Networks Ltd (London) [47.96 km]: 18.106 ms
Testing download speed................................................................................
Download: 43.18 Mbit/s
Testing upload speed......................................................................................................
Upload: 10.21 Mbit/s

So I'm not sure if banding is causing a problem - and frankly if it stays like this I'm happy.

Ah that makes sense, no worries and I’m glad to see you’ve got a bit more upload speed now Thumbs_Up

Re: Line down and now reconnected with totally different speeds

I have - its dropped twice more and both the down speed and the up speed have crept up a little - so I guess someone has done something serious at the cabinet.
