What are our options when service is going to be off for 8 days?

Hi all

The broadband in my village went off last night for anyone who was foolish enough to convert over to full fibre about 6 months ago, probably a hundred (at least) houses. When I contacted Plusnet this morning I was told that BT have said it won't be fixed until the 7th July! We got a rural Broadband grant so this was all put in as a government scheme on the basis that we had to take the connection when it went live (and therefore lose our old connections).

I don't really understand how it can possibly take that long to repair, it happened in the middle of the night so I'd presume that nobody cut through the fibre. It seems like we are in a situation now where BT have said it will be 8 days and because we have been told that there is nothing we can do now.

I work from home these days and it isn't difficult for me to envisage losing my job over not being able to work for a week, I've had broadband for probably 15+ years and I've never had an outage of more than a few hours before.

What can we as a community do about this now? We have any elderly residents that I'd presume will be without any way of communicating now. Is there some way we can bring pressure to bear?

Unfortunately mobile broadband isn't a solution really as the coverage is very poor in the village.

Many thanks for any ideas!

Ollie

@OllieTan

Welcome to the Community forums.

Is the report that it will take up to 8 days to repair or it will take 8 days? If the former then it might be back quicker.

There are many reasons why repairs can take a while. Just as an example, it might require digging up a major road and need council permissions, traffic management orders etc.

It sounds like there's little that you can do except go to a friend or into the office to work.

Are you in Cambridgeshire?  Thieves might have pulled the fibre optic cables thinking they were copper?
