Welcome to the forum. 🙂
I have no solution, other than to say that it's something that only the French provider can offer advice on.

@JCS45 assuming you've got a broadband connection in France, I'd be looking at VoIP. Convert your Plusnet account to broadband only, the port your UK number to VoIP. Then with for example a VoIP adapter to connect your existing phone, you can take that with you to France and make/receive calls directly on the UK number. You save costs since you are not paying for redirected calls at international rates

"The announcement is in French but with a strong American accent. Doesn't sound like orange to me. "
I don't know, because I have never (knowingly) heard it, but that is how I have always imagined a French Canadian accent to sound?

@JCS45 I see that Pnet does not offer voip with it's broadband so I will have to find an alternative.
Unless you make a lot of calls then A & A is a good option https://www.aa.net.uk/voice-and-mobile/voip-information/
Initial cost to port an existing number is £15, then just £1.44/m. Outgoing calls 1.5p/min to UK landlines 4p/min to mobiles.
A suitable ATA (Analogue telephone adapter) e.g Grandstream 801/802 can be picked up for around £40.

It was £12 inc VAT when I ported to them last month, and still is, AFAIK.

Some routers, such as the FritzBox 7530AX that Zen Internet supplied me with, include that functionality, so no external ATA is required.

@Mr_Paul thanks , I wasnt sure if the single line porting fee was the same as their normal setup. When I last ported anything to them it was the office 20 line block of numbers and so was completely different.
Appreciate that some routers have built in ATAs but since the OP is with PN , they're likely to be using a PN hub and (presumably) an Orange supplied router en France.
