Early transfer to VOIP on upgrade to Full Fibre

My current Fibre broadband and phone line rental contract ends in June 2025. I would in principle be happy to upgrade now to Full Fibre, but would lose the landline. I want to keep the landline number. As Plusnet are not offering VOIP, I would probably transfer to a separate VOIP provider like Voipstudio and get the number ported across.

However, the timing seems awkward. Would I have to sign up to Voipstudio in advance of changing the Plusnet contract, so as not to lose the home phone number? And would Plusnet allow the number to port away from them before the end of contract? Or is it simply a matter of continuing to pay the line rental to the end of the contract period?

Thanks!

Re: Early transfer to VOIP on upgrade to Full Fibre

Your phone number is 'quarantined' for 30 days after the transfer to Full Fibre, so you would have time to transfer it once the FF was up and running.

Note, however, that most VoIP  providers have problems transferring a 'ceased' number.

No, you need to upgrade to Full fibre first. That will cease the phone service, you then have 30 days to port the number to a voip supplier before its lost.

If you port the number before changing to Full fibre then it will cease your existing broadband,

And would Plusnet allow the number to port away from them before the end of contract? Or is it simply a matter of continuing to pay the line rental to the end of the contract period?

You can upgrade to full fibre before the end of the existing contract and then port the number as above

@prdixon

With FTTC your PN account is controlled by the phone line. Transfering your phone will lead to the account being cancelled plus early termination charges.

As stated you need to upgrade to FTTP first and once this is complete you have 30 days to "port" the phone number.

Sone VOIP providers (like A&A) will allow you to set up an account in advance with a new number so you can ensure your phone works with VOIP. Then, when FTTP is installed you port your original phone number in. With A&A you then cancel the other phone number. This also gives you a working phone during the porting of you old number.

Re: Early transfer to VOIP on upgrade to Full Fibre

@prdixon

I spoke to a VoIP supplier to check that they understood the need to retrieve a quarantined number and selected the supplier on their response to that question (they absolutely "got it").

I then set up the VoIP service on a temporary number, got it all working and then ordered the Plusnet full fibre upgrade.

Once I had a date for the full fibre install, I requested the landline number "port" for the next working day and it all went smoothly.

I don't think the landline was out of service for more than a few hours on "porting day" and that was only for incoming calls.

It then took a few months for Plusnet to sort the billing out....

I am the satisfied customer....

The easiest way to do it with minimum downtime is to have FTTP installed as well as your current connection. Once you are happy the FTTP is running ok then port your number out (which will cease your current connection). This will result in minimum downtime. Only drawback is you have two connections for a brief period of time. This is what I did.

The downside of that approach is that it requires a new Plusnet account … which if the existing account has email and / or a static IP address, both will be lost with the suggested tactic.
