John, I said I'd report what happened about my phone prob. Normal service was resumed the evening before the engineer arrived. He didn't know what happened because he's OR and the prob was solved by BT - all he knew was that the problem was at my local exchange where wires had got crossed, or something, where the local exchange wires met the wires that carried signal to the central exchange in the nearest big town. BT had been on the case for a week, he thought. other people - randomly - had also experienced the same problem as me, he said. I know this is unhelpful but I can't know what he didn't know either. Plusnet have closed down the issue now so they won't be telling us either. Sorry.
