One other thing to mention. You need to sort your phone out before the port so it works.
You may need to get an ATA.
That's exactly what I've done, using a Cisco ATA 192. This cheap (on eBay) little unit will operate two seperate phone numbers so at the moment it has just my VOIP number but it has the potential to port my existing number if the porting works out OK.
There don't seem (to me) to be any modem / routers available with integral VOIP for the UK market, there are however quite a few for Italy ?
In any case using a seperate ATA means I can change the router without having to take a chance on routers not intended for the UK market which have no support or manuals available.

@Batfrog some of the Draytek models have built-in voip ports , they're the nnnnVnn ones https://www.draytek.co.uk/products/comparison/router-comparison
They're ( Draytek ) are quite expensive so in reality a normal router and an ATA will likely be cheaper.
Another one to look at maybe is the Fritzbox https://en.avm.de/products/fritzbox/fritzbox-7530/ , its got voip ports and is also a DECT base unit. You can sometimes pick them up ( probably ex Zen ) on ebay

Thanks Brian, I'm OK on that front as I'm already running VoIP via a Siemens Gigaset S685IP DECT system.
The base unit plugs into the phone line and acts as a normal DECT system, but you can also plug the base into (any) router via an ethernet cable, and then it also supports another 6 VoIP accounts. The handsets can then make up to 2 VoIP and 1 PSTN call at the same time.
Obviously I'll lose the PSTN capability and then just use it with the VoIP accounts.
Its a nice bit of kit, and they sometimes come up for sale on ebay at pretty reasonable prices.

You’re quite correct of course but given that I have till next July when my Plusnet contract expires I’ve really just been having a (cheap) play.
Cisco ATA £6 www.ebay.co.uk/itm/394718887815
TP-Link Router £5.24 www.ebay.co.uk/itm/235113809203
The router was supposed to be faulty but the description suggested otherwise. Anyway it was worth a punt and it worked fine (and still does) A firmware update and a tinker here and there and it’s much better than my ancient ‘free’ Plusnet router. Time will tell I suppose.
As I say a cheap play !

@Batfrog a good plan. Get familiar with the technology and available kit in advance , then when you really need to use it you've got a better idea of what to get and how to configure it.

Have you checked recently as to what's available at your property - https://www.broadbandchecker.btwholesale.com/#/ADSL
FTTP shows up as WBC FTTP in the left hand column. More important is SOGEA shows as available.
If it is, you could phone PlusNet Customer Options Team on 0800 013 2632 and see what deal they would offer you for Internet only. Gives you an idea of what might be. If you like the deal there's nothing to stop you switching now. You'd probably get a Hub2 for £6.99 p&p

Yip, many of my neighbours are FTTP. They all now have TWO cables going to their properties. For some reason Openreach can't or won't take down the old copper wire. Maybe things will change after this month which I believe is 'stop-sell' for copper ?

@MisterW wrote:WLR021/14 WLR renumber with number export
@rmappleby that does still exist BUT the order is fraught with possibility of error and so there is AFAIK only one ISP that will attempt it , A & A, and they will only attempt to port to their own voip service. AIUI that is so they have visibility of both the renumber and the port orders, and so if anything goes wrong they can cancel the orders before it screws up!
In addition , the Plusnet ordering system is highly automated (it has to be because of the volumes) and almost certainly doesnt have the renumber with export option.
Ok, that probably rules out the other option I discovered that looked like it would allow PN to initiate the transfer (see the details back here in post 122 ).

I've done much the same, with a Cisco SPA112. Very useful experiment, as I've learned a lot for not a lot of investment, and a pretty low monthly ongoing cost from A&A.
I wish A&A could provide a more cost-effective broadband service, as their customer service and understanding of customer needs is superb. Despite the increase in monthly cost I'm still very tempted to switch our broadband over to A&A when our Plusnet contract runs out, mostly because of their customer service.

I have gone down a similar route and picked up a Cisco SPA112 although not for quite such a bargain price! Because the ATA has RJ11 sockets, an RJ11-to-BT adapter was also needed, but these are quite cheap. The ATA is connected to an Ethernet port on the existing router and I tested with the DECT phone plugged into the ATA. After configuring the VOIP provider and a little tinkering of the router configuration, it all seems to work. The DECT phone may eventually be replaced with a VOIP version, but for now this appears to be a workable solution and certainly cheaper than having to buy a new Vigor VOIP capable router.

A very good point. Apart from the lowish cost of Plusnet they have had ( and still do ?) excellent customer service. One of their strongest points being their Yorkshire call centre.
In my personal experience A&A similarly have excellent support, both accounts and technical. My initial VOIP number had a problem in that it didn't always receive incoming calls. On my initial conversaion with A&A the CSA rapidly recognised that he couldn't solve the issue and passed the call to someone who could, A&A went to great lenghts to resolve the issue eventually offering a free replacement number having found the problem to be something to do with BT not recognising it.
On the other hand a few years ago I had several tortureous conversations with TalkTalk on behalf of a friend - communication being the first problem and getting to speak to anyone technical the second. They much preferred to send out more equipment and get me off the phone rather than address the real problem. I don't suppose they've changed much ?

having spent many hours helping a neighbour with a TT fibre install recently, I can confirm they havent
He now has 3 different TT routers, 4 if you count the Eero and a grandsream ATA. Most of which is not used.

Only once have I used a router supplied by a broadband supplier, back when we had Virgin cable at our old house. Since then I've always refused the "free" router offer, although Plusnet ignored my plea to not send out their one (still sat here in the box it came in - never been used).
I've never been convinced that the "free" routers are much good, not least because they often seem to be budget models with few features and poor wifi coverage. I will admit to being surprised by how much of an improvement we got by installing a half-decent 802.11ac router (although that's old hat now and it's probably time I upgraded it).
It's some of the added features I find useful, though, like the router also providing a file sharing service on the LAN, with it's own USB SSD. Useful for us, as we have a mix of Apple, Linux and Windows machines, so being able to easily share files without needing a proper NAS is handy.
Also useful to have a fairly comprehensive firewall, one that can be customised to block unwanted domains. Being able to quickly see the pattern of our data usage is also helpful (even if that did show how much time my wife spends watching Netflix!).

Done the same. Bought a Draytek Vigor 2860n-plus off ebay many years ago. Used it on adsl, vdsl-fttc, now on FTTP .. it is old and won't go beyond 300mb/s but does all I need
Main home network, second network for smart devices that never receive security updates, and a third wifi guest network.

It is I suppose true that ISPs generally supply cheap and cheerful routers but its also true that they usually work and in some cases allow the ISP to do some checking in the case of a fault.
Nonetheless it never fails to amaze me with things like routers that ‘people’ seem to want the latest gizmo, often without knowing what its for or how to use it. For the majority I doubt they ever use a routers USB socket, guest network or even know that they have a firewall let alone what it does. That said I suspect that same majority just want an internet connection because nowadays it is difficult to manage without one, banking, doctors appointments, even government stuff – pensions, road tax etc, etc, etc. Remember VCRs - Most people just wanted to time shift TV programs but many machines had sophisticated editing facikities owners often didn't even know about !
Back to the core subject, will Plusnet be offering a ‘landline’ service ? A growing number of people I know, including many members of my own family don’t have a landline and some that do don’t use it or even have a phone plugged in. Instead they have one or more mobiles.
If a growing number of people don’t use a landline why start a new service for a shrinking market ? There is a contradiction there with Plusnet – Why are they closing their mobile service ?
The answer I suspect is as other have said, Plusnet is slowly being ‘dissolved’ into BT. I wouldn’t mind betting that one day soon Plusnet customers will wake up to find they have become BT customers, at least they will be as their contracts end.
