Connecting a Playstation 3 to the Internet

There are 2 ways to connect your PlayStation 3 to the Internet; using a wired (Ethernet) connection or through a wireless connection.

Wired Connection

  1. Make sure that your PlayStation 3 is connected to a broadband-enabled network using an Ethernet cable.
  2. Click Settings in the Home menu, then Network Settings.
  3. Click Internet Connection Settings.
  4. A message will pop up saying that you will be disconnected from the Internet. Choose Yes.
  5. Choose Wired Connection.
  6. Choose Easy - the basic settings are automatically set.
  7. Now click Save.
  8. If you want to you can now test your wired connection by clicking Test Connection. Your PlayStation 3 will now try and connect to the Internet. If the connection isn’t successful you should follow the instructions which will appear, to check your settings.

Wireless Connection

  1. Click Settings in the Home menu, then Network Settings.
  2. Click Internet Connection Settings.
  3. A message will pop up saying that you will be disconnected from the Internet. Choose Yes.
  4. Choose Wireless Connection.
  5. Now choose Scan. Your PlayStation 3 will now search for any available access points and show these in a list.
    Note: Some PlayStation 3 models have an 'Automatic' option, which if followed will complete the required settings for you automatically. Simply click on Automatic if the access point you are using supports automatic setup.
  6. From the list of access points choose one which you’d like to use.
  7. Check the SSID for the access point, press the right button. If you don’t know what the SSID is then you should contact the person who setup or runs the access point for more information.
  8. Select the security method necessary, press the right button.
  9. Enter the encryption key. This will be shown as a series of asterisks (*). If you don’t know what the encryption key is you should contact the person who setup or runs the access point for more information.
  10. Now press the right button.
  11. Choose either Easy or Custom and adjust the settings.

    • Easy - the basic settings are automatically set.
    • Custom – you will need to enter the settings manually.
  12. Now click Save.
  13. If you want to you can now test your wireless connection by clicking Test Connection. If the connection isn’t successful you should follow the instructions which will appear, to check your settings.
