Account holder, but wait until final bill is paid, and there are no charges or refunds pending.

If a DD mandate is not used for some extended duration, then bank will cancel it regardless.

I left Plusnet at the beginning of July. About three weeks later my final bill arrived (a refund) and that money appeared back in my account a few days later via my direct debit. I was keeping an eye on my account to see when Plusnet finally closed it down (as it still said account closing) and noted that, about two months further on, a message appeared on it to say I no longer had a payment method specified, i.e. my direct debit was no longer active. I had not shut it down but when i checked with my bank it was no longer showing. I assume that it must have been Plusnet via their bank that had closed it.
My account still shows as closing (about four months after my final bill was refunded) and while some pages are no longer available but I can still get the home page, the bills and payments page (still showing my last bill as a refund) and the referrals page! I also had a ticket recently asking me to review my contact requirements!
Do Plusnet ever finally shut an account down?

@jgb AFAIK, only you (as the bank account holder) or your bank, as mentioned up thread, can close a DD, but ICBW.

@jab1 That was my opinion too and in the past I have always closed direct debits when I have finished with them. I know that my bank closes then if unused for more than 12 or13 months (to allow for annual ones), but this one was closed after three months or so. As I said I checked with the bank and it is defintely no longer there in the list and Plusnet have said I do not have a valid payment method (which of course I do not need!). Possibly another vagary in Plusnet's amazing billing machine!
