I've just signed up for a renewal of my contract, but Plusnet's system seems to think that my new contract should start immediately. I'd like the new contract to start on the renewal date (2nd October), which seems normal to me. Can someone in Plusnet implement this request?

I'm afraid by default when you renew online it kicks in within a couple of working days.
The only way around this would be to call our Customer Options Team on 0800 013 2632

Thank you, Matthew, for the COT number. It’s taken me a week to recover from the response I received from that team.
First of all, they wouldn’t change the start date of the new contract; when I renew my car insurance it starts from the renewal date, so why are Plusnet incapable of doing that?!. Secondly, they actually suggested that I change over to BT, in order to continue with a broadband/ digital phone contract.
I’ve been a Plusnet customer for probably more than a dozen years, and to be told that a better option would be to transfer to another ISP beggars belief. I want to remain a Plusnet customer; I enjoy being able to speak to someone in Yorkshire when I have a problem; I enjoy being able to use the Plusnet Community in order to read the very useful advice, given out every day. I want to continue with my Plusnet email address. Don’t Plusnet get any of that?!

Is there an unmentioned context here? Did you state that you wanted to retain your land line service?
It should be possible to renew existing contracts as is, though there is an understandable desire to move users to FTTP or SOGEA. If you want FTTP and to retain a 'land line' then the strategic course is to BT for broadband plus digital voice as Plusnet are not now offering voice services to new users or existing users migrating to FTTP.

Superusers are not staff, but they do have a direct line of communication into the business in order to raise issues, concerns and feedback from the community.

As you intimated, Plusnet will in the future not be offering landline phone services. When that will happen appears to uncertain at the moment, but I would guess that I have just agreed my last contract with them for these services. What I suggested to the Plusnet COT was a split contract where BT would provide the digital landline service and Plusnet would provide the broadband service. This seemed logical to me, since Plusnet is part of the BT family – but, apparently this not going to happen.

That clarifies the context. AFAIK BT does not provide digital voice over some other provider’s broadband product. BT Digital Voice requires BT’s router … as supplied with their broadband product. In context the advice given is the only option available to meet your requirement.
If you want split service, then why not opt for FTTP (or SOGEA) with Plusnet and move the “landline” number to anyone of the other VoIP providers? I suggest that is entirely better than any of the options available from BT.
