Could be Cityfibre yeah, which I would be quite happy with. But again, Plusnet is pretty much BT and they can't do it?

In York mate Smiley

Beccause City Fibre have got York pretty well sewn up and BT are concentrating elsewhere?

York isn't even on the BT Fibre build programme.

This story from 2016 might help explain

https://financial-news.co.uk/ofcom-to-break-bts-openreach-network-monopoly/

Chances are Openreach may never install full fibre to an area which already has it from the likes of City Fibre, does not make economic sense.

So, BT/Openreach appear to have given up in York, as far as Full fibre is concerned? Any other areas, although looking at their, admittedly June 2022 programme, i can't see any?

Hmm so there is no intention of upgrading me, offering me the chance to upgrade.

The speed checker on the plusnet website never works for me, does anyone know if they have a "keep me informed" box/button? I am now starting to wonder if they just lied to me.

@Dan_the_Van

Does that mean that eventually, companies like BT and Plusnet will offer broadband services over the, (for example), CityFibre network, or will such providers never be available to those not served by the Openreach fibre network?

For example, the CityFibre network has been available to me for about 3 years. Initially Vodaphone were the only available ISP as they had some sort of tie in, but now 13 suppliers are available here via CityFibre.

Openreach initially said 2024 for building FTTP in this area, but that has been pushed back at least twice, and currently says "by December 2026".

I wouldn't be surprised if Openreach abandon building FTTP here. CityFibre have one of their street cabinets outside my house, and when I glanced in there recently when a engineer was working in it, the take up didn't look very high.

@Mr_Paul

This is what I'm now wondering, if Plusnet are now stringing me along for their £50 a month knowing full well I can't upgrade now and possibly ever!

@Mr_Paul

I'm just the messenger, my thinking is why would openreach come along and install full fibre in an area which already has an established full fibre provider, the same applies in reverse.

Some ISP only provide a internet connection be it via copper or fibre so at the end of the day the only important factor will be price, staying with Plusnet/BT would have no benefit as they all basically provide the same connection but at a different price.

Much better things to get hot under the collar about like cyclists not obeying the highway and Audi drivers thinking the roads are for their exclusive use.

@richmc You could always transfer to one of the other providers. As I said, BT/OR appear to have given up on York.

Re: 15 Companies offering me 1gig download!

PlusNet obtain their lines from BT Wholesale using the OpenReach network.

CityFibre also wholesale their network and the companies who have signed up can provide a service.

To offer a CityFibre product an ISP must first sign a wholesale agreement and then spend money ensuring there back office systems are compatible with CF.

As PN are a BT Group company I consider it unlikely they'll use anybody other than BT Wholesale for their lines.

@bmc

Yes, I understand that.

"As PN are a BT Group company I consider it unlikely they'll use anybody other than BT Wholesale for their lines."

But if Openreach, (also part of BT Group), make a business decision not to build a fibre network in an area that is already covered by CityFibre, would BT Wholesale  / Plusnet / BT / EE still maintain that "Openreach only" stance?

If they did, then they could potentially be looking at losing a lot of business simply due to geography.

Yes mate, that's the idea. it's just very disappointing that Plusnet make no effort or explain that I'll never get faster access and just take my money. I'd leave now if I could but they tied me into another year of £50 a month for [-Censored-] internet access

With all due respect it's not PN's job to explain - it's expected customers do their own research and then sign up to what's on offer from their chosen ISP.

Plus PN do not know what OR's plans are for York. There are obviously none at the moment but who knows in the future. At the moment OR are concentrating on other areas.

Re: 15 Companies offering me 1gig download!

Could be a long time before they get there, @bmc  - York is not even mentioned on the current FF Build Programme.

@jab1

Is Openreach's "FF Build Programme" publicly available, (do you have a link)?

I would like to see what it says about my exchange: Bradwell Abbey.

As I mentioned in an earlier post in this thread, I have seen significantly different dates, ("2024" and "by December 2026").
