EdgeRouter 4 Poe DNS issues with Fibre and Openreach ONT

Hi,

I have activated my Plusnet today having moved from SKY. I am expecting that I can simple use the Edgerouter 4 connected to the Openreach ONT, without needing to the use the plusnet router or a Draytek.

I appear to be connected to the Internet but cannot resolve anything for DNS issues.

Contents of PPPoE log from Edgerouter is:

Re: EdgeRouter 4 Poe DNS issues with Fibre and Openreach ONT

@JohnD76   Welcome to the Plusnet Community Fora.

Why not start with connecting your Plusnet hub? This will make it easy to determine whether your service is yet up and running (this can take up until midnight for Plusnet to fully activate the service).

Once a running service is confirmed, look at swapping to your favoured device.

Re: EdgeRouter 4 Poe DNS issues with Fibre and Openreach ONT

@Baldrick1 the connection is live , its authenticated and got an IP address and gateway via pppoe

local IP address 91.x.x.x
remote IP address 172.x.x.x

@JohnD76 I'm no edgerouter expert but this

name-server none

In the pppoe config don't look right !! You either need to use the ISP provided ones from the pppoe or you need to set some manually...

Re: EdgeRouter 4 Poe DNS issues with Fibre and Openreach ONT

Hi Baldrick,

I spent most of the morning tethered from my phone whilst trying to get the ER working and have relented and connected the PlusNet router in and it is working well.

I have noticed the way the dns servers are set up in the plusnet router and will try that once I have logged off from work, but I have tried using the google dns servers and this also didn't work. 😞

Re: EdgeRouter 4 Poe DNS issues with Fibre and Openreach ONT

Hi MisterW,

Thanks for the swift reply.

I was running name-server auto previously and also configured it to use the google dns servers but got the same results, so something is amiss.

My sky fibre was set up and working without issue, but this needed ipv6 prefix delegation, so I have removed this from the config, removed the ipv6  firewall rules and added a pppoe interface which is connected to eth0. So there have been a few changes.

The connection appears to be established, but the dns issue is the next hurdle to get over....

I will keep trying and report back.

Re: EdgeRouter 4 Poe DNS issues with Fibre and Openreach ONT

I have noticed the way the dns servers are set up in the plusnet router

The Plusnet router will ALWAYS get the Plusnet DNS servers from the pppoe negotiation. The DNS server configuration settings on the Hub 2 ONLY configure which DNS servers to supply to LAN clients via the DHCP lease.

By default it will supply its own lan address ( 192.168.1.254 ) and it (the Hub 2) will forward DNS requests to the Plusnet DNS servers obtained from the pppoe. If you specify DNS servers , then the LAN clients will use these directly and bypass the router DNS forwarding.

Re: EdgeRouter 4 Poe DNS issues with Fibre and Openreach ONT

I have 4 DHCP scopes on my edge router which use differnet dns servers based on the usecase, kids, parents, guests and IoT, and 2 vlans.

The pools have not changed for years and the clients are still getting the correct assignments and dns servers, but for some reason they are unable to resolve anything on the internet connected via the ER (which was working with SKY). I am a little reluctant to blat my ER config, since it has taken a while to get it to the stage and it has been working faultlessly for years.

I might see how I can export and reimport it if needed.....

Re: EdgeRouter 4 Poe DNS issues with Fibre and Openreach ONT

I have exported the config and run the basic wizard for PPPoE and this is working so there is something in my config (dns or lack thereof) which is causing the problem.

I am going to inspect the configs and get it working with my setup.

Thanks all, I will report back......

Re: EdgeRouter 4 Poe DNS issues with Fibre and Openreach ONT

Fix
I have reviewed my old config and the new bare bones basic pppoe config through the wizard and spotted the problem.

The services NAT config was sending all traffic to the eth0 interface still and not the newly created pppoe0 interface I had created....

Thanks for all the advice and pointers.
